FRAGments #2: Indie Fragrance Event S/S 2013 #Podcast: Saskia Wilson-Brown + Nikki Sherritt!,
FRAGments is/was an an indie, artisanal and underground event that pulled together spectacular brands from the West Coast and beyond! This event happened on 6/22 in the Highland Park in the San Fernando Valley in a cool little gallery of more than just wall art, but 3-D art displays as well. As one of the hottest days that spring, it was an intoxicating event.
It’s time for another podcast of 2 people from the FRAGment’s event: this time we have Saskia Wilson-Brown and Nicole Sherritt from Rebel & Mercury. This was an amazing event and this is the way for you to partake in the event without spending a ton of money!
Saskia Wilson-Brown has accomplished a great deal in her diverse career. She’s also founded The Institute for Art and Olfaction – a fast-growing institute aiming at art and fragrances that offers seminars, classes and more. Nere’s a quick bite into IA&O:
The Institute for Art and Olfaction advances public and artistic engagement with scent.
We do this by providing public education programs, building an archive of contemporary scent releases, offering a residency-based laboratory for cross-discipline experimentation, and by inciting innovation and collaboration between perfumers, scientists and other creative practitioners. Through these efforts, we extend the world of scent beyond its traditional boundaries of appreciation and use.
Saskia was the moderator for the group discussion and I managed to catch up to her before you she left!. I wanted to get her take on what the event was emerging to be and other insights!
PODCAST Block 2: FRAGments#2 with Saskia Wilson Brown and Nikki Sherritt.
There is a 10 second +/- break of silence between each podcast
If you haven’t seen FRAGments #1 post and podcast, rewind back to Thursday Oct 24, 2013. (Later on there will be a link to the FRAGments #1 and all after that!) The podcast features Saskia Wilson-Brown first, a quick 10+ second break and then Nickki Sherritt of Rebel & Mercury Natural Perfumes!
Nikki Sherritt is an natural botanical fragrance creator as well as working with candles in luscious scents too. Check out in the podcast how she evolved from Rebel & Mercury (formally Gabriel’s Aunt) started out as a candle maker with a focus on 100% natural blends. 6 years ago they added perfumes and now organic body oils. R & M also create custom candle blends for other companies and teach their special botanical candle-making methods to the public.
Rebel & Mercury has sprung up out the need to make natural distinctive, daring and fun. All perfumes, candles and body oils are created by hand in small batches from our studio in Seattle, WA.
Rebel & Mercury’s nose is Nikki Sherritt-Lewis and is the creative vision behind the brand.
What makes us different:
We strive to use as many organic and local ingredients and suppliers as possible.
-Our grain alcohol is distilled here in Seattle, WA
-Our body oils are created in a base of 85% organic oils
-Our blends are rich, unique, long-lasting and 100% natural
-Our candles are made using our own organic proprietary coconut wax blend. We do do not use Soy, Palm or Paraffin.
-Our candles are made using unique blends that will change the way you look at the natural candle. No more boring blends.
Her fragrances include:
Royal Couple EDP:
The King and Queen of Essences: Rose and Jasmine. There is no other combination that is more classic and that blends as seamlessly as these do. This is one of our most beautiful perfumes in our line. Like the classic, “Joy” it is bursting with lots of Rose and Jasmine and given a crisp twist with Grapefruit and Cognac and a dirty dry down. Royal Couple is a timeless blend.
Rich, Earthy and dry with a powerful sweetness. Unique and complex. Created over 2 years ago; this blend is the epitome of the boundless traveler. Free spirited, earthy, eclectic, lover of the earth and friend to everyone
This decadent blend is a mixture of 2 different types of watery and heady jasmine mixed with the light and powdery mimosa flower. Our favorite blend. Absolutely gorgeous.
Lightly floral, fresh, a touch earthy with peppery spice.
Inspiration: I always go back to my time in Southern France or more specifically, Provence. Var en Provence brings memories of endless Mimosas, Lavender Fields and Olive Trees.
Green, Herbaceous, slightly sweet and lightly floral
Inspiration: I always pictured myself in my own really cool, funky backyard with all the scentspiration I could ever want. Herbs, Some Citrus Trees, Gorgeous roses, and low lying earthy plants that feel soft under my feet.
Cigars, the smell of a man’s cologne, musky air. I wanted a blend that would be a little rough around the edges, but refined and a little sweet. Parloir is perfectly suited for men and women. I like that there is a touch of sweetness mixed with earthiness and spice.
