FRAGments #4: Indie Fragrance Event S/S 2013 #Podcast! Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery & Jolie Laide!

FRAGments is/was an an indie, artisanal and underground event that pulled together spectacular brands from the West Coast and beyond! This event happened on 6/22 in the Highland Park in the San Fernando Valley in a cool little gallery of more than just wall art,  but 3-D art displays as well. As one of the hottest days that spring, it was an intoxicating event.

It’s time for another podcast of 2 people from the FRAGment’s event: this time we have Shannon representing Eau de Yosh and Lisa Fong from Artemesia Natural Perfumes. This was an amazing event and this is the way for you to partake in the event without spending a ton of money!

Now we get to have some fun! By now I am running headlong into the day and it’s really warm and the aromas of all these rich botanicals is wafting throughout the gallery. If one went to the back of the gallery where there was less moving air (and a lot more warmth), it was a heady blend of scents and bits of other ingredients. Let’s just say one could easily get intoxicated by these fabulous scents! Someone was kind enough to give me some tissue to breathe into as well as something to clear my scent experience (read the nose). One can’t smell all these scents and not get a lingering scent overload occurring. But the next two fragrance designers were really a turning point to help me wrap my brain around what “natural botanicals” really meant!

Laurie Stern is the creator of Velvet and SweetPea’s Purrfumery. Such a lovely collection and a lovely woman with a fabulous sense of humor (which you can hear all the giggles we were having on the podcast).

The fragrances that Laurie featured at Fragments are the following
The award-winning

Fleur de Caramel is a scent unlike any other I have tried. It’s a warm caramel infused with rich cognac and sultry night-blooming frangipani. This indulgent perfume is one to savor slowly, from its tart red mandarin and spicy butterfly lily opening to a truly scrumptious finish as the Purrfumery’s secret caramel accord lingers on your skin. This gourmand blend is in a base of Tahitian vanilla infused organic grape alcohol. (Also available as an EDP)

Terrain: This is a scent that would work for both men and women!
Bold, spicy, and stimulating – a sweeping survey of the land’s richest scents. Mexican lime invigorates this self-assured mix with wild Bulgarian geranium, frankincense and Japanese yuzu.

Honey:

This regal, opulent composition of French orange blossom, and Moroccan and Bulgarian roses sits on a throne of deep vetiver, Madagascar vanilla, honey, beeswax and my bee guru’s propolis. It is crowned with rare antique clove, pomegranate and pink grapefruit.

This royal blend is set in a rich base of sandalwood and vanilla infused alcohol.(Also available in an EDP as well!)

Fir-ever Young: is like a visit to a great forest!

A whole forest of Douglas fir, silver fir, grand fir, blue spruce, juniper, and more are joined by green and fruity florals, juicy citruses and black currants, with frankincense and agarwood for just a hint of smoke. Fir-ever Young is planted firmly in a base of pineapple sage, fir, lavender, rose, agarwood, and frankincense house-infused alcohols.

Songbird

A luscious, mouth-watering blend of citrus, spices, and sweet, narcotic flowers sensually unfurls towards a soft, powdery finish. Antique cinnamon, blood orange, tuberose, and Tasmanian heather are only a few of the notes in this sexy, complex melody.

This ambrosial blend is warmed by its base of Tahitian vanilla infused alcohol.

JolieLaide’s Heather Kauffman really has a knack for creating unusual fragrances that capture one’s attention. Based in San Francisco, the commmunity in that city is strong and the collective is very supportive. It’s nice to know of cities or locales where you can find a group of fragrance designers/creators who are so immersed in their work and also with each other! Heather’s philosophy is clearly stated in the name Jolie Laide meaning beauty and ugly and in French it means an unconventional beauty. That’s a philosophy we can dig into.
Her Etsy store is chock full of fragrances.. and finding the perfect one (if you settle on just one, you are a better person than me!) A perfumer who believes in using natural botanicals, she falls into the niche quite nicely– particularly since each fragrance is hand-crafted (as virtually all were in this event)

  1. Artemisia is my dog’s name..for the herb. These combos do sound very interesting and out of the ordinary.

  2. Heather, I have gone into the post and reattached your Etsy URL to the link. I am testing again. Please test it so that you can see if it works on your end!

It works for me…. but I want you to be sure it does as well
