Maleficent Review

I saw Maleficent on Saturday in a great theater. Interesting to note that there was a great range in ages in guests attending this film– from little children (including a baby who started crying in the middle of the film) to older adults. It is an all ages film according to the staff of this theater.

This movie is a flip or a twist on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale we all grew up with… and the movie starts out telling the story of Maleficent and Stefan. It’s a complex and drawn-out sequence but it makes perfect sense and helps build the drama and creates the background for the relationships and the action.

The details in the set design, special effects, costumes, makeup and hair were phenomenal. The entire thing is built seamlessly on the growing weight of the tale’s story arc and it keeps pushing it thematically. The fairies are there and Aurora’s “fairy godmother” (Maleficent) is included in the coterie of magical creatures– including the wings of Maleficent.

It’s an amazing film. Well worth seeing again and definitely with a great a theater as you can afford to see it in. 3D or no 3D you won’t miss too much but the aerial action would benefit from the 3D effects. A stellar flick, I would highly recommend this to anyone. I could do on and on about the movie’s attributes and character development but I don’t want to give you any spoilers- -of which there are plenty.
