When it comes to beauty treatments, spas are a great place to go. Who doesn’t want to get a great facial or massage? Looking for some wonderfuls spas that deal with Botox, lasers and liposuction, that’s an entirely a different animal.
Medical spas, also known as medi-spas, blend the best of two worlds — a relaxing spa experience with the procedures and expertise found at a doctor’s office. A doctor oversees the medical spa and is in charge of procedures that fall under the medical realm. Estheticians handle the more routine day spa therapies.
Source: About.com description of what a medical spa (medi-spa) is.
When I visit a medi-spa I look at the environment with two different goals: nice facial treatments and the medical treatments that are being presented to me. I have been to medi-spas before and I enjoy talking serious treatments with staff members.
Recently I got to visit the KO’AN Center in Santa Monica— a destination spa for consumers who want great treatments both spa and medical treatments in one location. As I visited, I could tell that the spa itself would be a place that celebrities frequented. It’s luxe presentation is both soothing and lovely with a cool lounge for those who are in between treatments!
I was able to visit this spa pre-Oscars and get a “sampling” of 3 treatments in just a couple of hours. I met Zaria, Sarah, Jennifer and one other aesthetician (Lisa? ) when I was at the spa. I was so very much in need of some pampering.. and pampered I was!!
The first treatment was with Zaria for a cleansing of my face and 411 about me and my skin. I love the client lounges in each room– they are HEATED!! (Talk about being comfy!!) When I go to a spa, I pack my favorite foundation and sunblock because I like to have my products on hand. Zaria recognized my Colorescience brush-on powder sunblock. We had a great time talking about this line because the KO’AN spa carries the brand. She did a thorough cleansing of my face and balancing it and then I met Sarah!
Sarah gave me a 20 minute Regenlite laser treatment. A far different treatment from the IPL, this is a laser that leaves you with no down time. The 20 minutes I got was fast, virtually pain-free (without numbing cream) as was one pass of the laser over my entire face! This is a treatment that I would highly recommend anyone seeking to take care of acne, fine (and not so fine) lines, discoloration and other issues.
Regenlite’s Smart Pulse technology is designed to repair and reverse signs of agine without damaging the skin. With every pulse of laser light, collagen production is stimulated, enhancing skin rejuvenation and reducing wrinkles, fine lines, and the effects of rosacea, acne and scarring. Treatment causes a natural bio-chemical reaction that stimulates the body’s healing and repair mechanisms. Regenlite successfully treats acne and cystic acne patients and is the only laser approved for the delicate areas around the eyes. 60 minute service. For optimal results we recommend 4 to 5 treatments, depending on treatment area.
After the Regenlite was done, I was queued up for the i-Lipo Ultra!! This is one cool device and nurse practitioner, Jennifer told me everything I needed to know about it!
This is a multi- treatment device. There are no needles or scalpels nor is there any pain or downtime. It’s virtually bulletproof but there are caveats to that comment. (If you are seeking to have body-sculpting done, you need advice of medical personnel trained in this device! Meaning visit the KO’AN Center ). Each treatment is for a specific area of your face or body. Each treatment for each area is 20 minutes and if it’s a bi-lateral body part (like hips), the treatment is split between the sides. It’s an amazing treatment and Jennifer and I spent my 30 minutes with her talking about this treatment. This is one of the most used treatments by celebrities particularly at red carpet time to carve the body into a shape that will fit that perfect dress. This is such a great treatment!
I also was given some great products from the KO’AN Center skincare line which I haven’t tried yet but will use including sunblock and a cleanser.
If you are seeking a top-notch medi-spa, this is one place I would recommend. The staff is friendly, professional and very well-trained. They are exceptionally knowledgeable.
I was given a tour of the center and was really impressed how quiet the hall was where the treatments were going on. It was simply lovely. The staff is very good at answering questions and helping reassure you that you have made a wise choice in treatments.
Let’s be honest here. I don’t go to medi-spas often but when I do go, I vet them very carefully. This is one medi-spa I am happy to recommend based on my interviews/conversations with the staff, the treatments I had and how they lived up to what I was told to expect. Everything went really well for me that day and I was able to go out to dinner that night for dinner. That would have been unheard of in any other medi-spa I have been to before having similar kinds of treatments. This is one great place!
Disclosure: I was provided abbreviated treatments of the treatments mentioned at no cost to me. I have received products from the Ko’An Center as well. Will I go back again? I absolutely hope to get back there very very soon! It’s an awesome place!

These sound like wonderful treatments. The laser is interesting, and I wonder how different it is from my home LED thingy. I am also curious to know if the laser results will last.
Pamela.. I had a 20 min version of that laser. This is one you can feel but it’s not PAINFUL.. there is no topical required. I liked it.. it was fairly relaxing (as a pinch could be). The mid-face is more sensitive closer to the eyes.
I thought it’s a great improvement over an IPL
