Sleep is quite a hot topic these days. Getting enough sleep will improve your skin, your workouts, along with giving you more energy reserves for work or play. There are many different aspects on improving sleep quality and some of them can be found in this piece from guest contributor, Elizabeth Sullivan (BlogonDirt.com)
5 Reasons Why Hollywood Needs to Get More Sleep
by Elizabeth Sullivan
The industry is always on the run, so the people working in it put in long hours of work, which often causes severe sleep deprivation. Unfortunately, that combination could lead to various affections which, in time, will impact lives: high blood pressure, obesity, type-2 diabetes, heart diseases or cognitive problems, just to name a few.
Let’s not beat around the bush: sleep deprivation is still considered the most well-known epidemic in the entertainment industry, but also the least discussed one. Two-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler brought it to public attention with his 2006 documentary Who Needs Sleep?
I know that lack of sleep is not an exclusively Hollywood issue – in fact, it is a nationwide problem (I’d say worldwide, considering mainly the developed societies in a hurry to get things done and make money). But Hollywood builds up models and sets trends for so many people, so there’s always a lot of attention focused on what happens there.
Here are just five reasons why the film citadel should encourage its people to get more sleep:
Improved health
Healthy people work well and bring positive results. A good night’s sleep won’t grant anyone immunity from diseases, but lack of it will inevitably ease the way for diabetes, obesity or heart conditions to kick in. Those health risks will become a certainty in some years, but they will. So why not prevent that? The sleep industry has made it easy for us to enjoy fantastic sleep: there are so many innovative, modern mattresses and beds, such as Casper’s bed-in-a-box or Purple’s unique mattress, that it is impossible not to find the one product that suits you perfectly. All it takes is reading reviews and making an informed purchase.
Decreased risk of injuries
Statistics say that, out of five auto accidents in the USA, at least one derives from drowsy driving, which is caused by sleep deprivation. But that is not the only type of injury people could get: households or on-set accidents are extremely common as well. Actors and film crew members are all prone to such incidents if they don’t get enough sleep. The Wexler documentary I mentioned earlier was inspired by the death of an assistant cameraman who had fallen asleep while driving. Specialists explain that there’s a phenomenon called “micro-sleep,” which usually lasts between one and ten seconds when people struggle to stay awake. During this interval, the brain shuts down involuntarily, and that happens when driving while being sleep deprived.
Weight control
The eternal Hollywood issue: staying thin. Well, one part of the solution consists in getting enough, proper sleep which will help actors (or anyone, for that matter) maintain their weight. On the other hand, sleep loss leads to overeating (especially non-healthy foods) which eventually causes weight problems.
Improved memory
This one goes straight to actors: what better solution to make sure that you remember all those lines you have to say in a movie than getting a good rest every night? Numerous studies have shown that our brain processes and consolidates memories while we sleep; but when we lose sleep, our memory suffers. So make sure you sleep well the night before shooting any scene, and you’ll perform much better on the set.
Excellent sex life

When you’re too tired, even your sex life suffers. Hence, no happy smiles and no babies. And look at Eva Longoria’s smiling face while expecting: do you think she’s getting enough sleep.
I bet she does: moms-to-be need even more rest than the average person and this is one more reason for Hollywood to encourage healthy slumber behaviors.
