I have lost both my parents in the last 2 years. Losing my dad really hurt a lot. Losing my mother was even harder. I thought I had prepared for these losses.. but I found the laugh (and the tears) were “on me”. I lost a few friends during that period too.
What I miss most are their voices and seeing them smile or their thoughtful expressions as they mulled over a question. It’s things like that we all seem to miss when a person (or pet) dear to us passes on. As I thought about this (and this specific post), I have wondered how I would communicate what I wanted to say to so many people but particularly my family and others close to me what I wanted them to know. While I know the power of writing things down, the lack of audio makes it less potent because over time you forget what someone’s voice sounds like and the memory of their laugh, their smile (of their mouth and in their eyes) looks like. When I heard about this app, I saw it to be a really smart advancement in the use of technology- but also good for those who would be left behind. No longer is it a case of “If I knew then, what I know now”. Instead this app provides the opportunity to capture video, audio and photos from you or ones by you for someone else who can’t take the photos or videos themselves.

I hope that this app isn’t something you need to use “immediately” for yourself, your parents, siblings or dear friends. BUT, if that is the situation you are living in, this app could be a good way for the person in question to document the “stuff” of their lives and those who they care about. Even if they don’t pass on, that content is still there and could be shared later on. But for those who have lost a person near and dear to them, this is ONE great app that will be on my phone!
