What some people view as easy, others might be struggling with. This is the case with sleep. For most of us, it just takes putting our head on the pillow and drifting off.
However, there are people who don’t have it this easy. For one reason or another, they have difficulties falling asleep, which in turn has a negative impact both on their physical and mental health.
As the infographic below by DisturbMeNot suggests, there are many negative effects that can come from sleep deprivation, and some of these are so severe that they can turn into serious sleep-related disorders.
Check out this killer infographic that provides tons of details on the importance of sleep and lots more!

Here are some of the negative effects that sleep deprivation can have on our health.
Depression
One of the negative things that can come from a lack of sleep is depression. People who have difficulty falling asleep or experience sleep deprivation are often more stressed and anxious, which can result in less motivation and ultimately depression.
Lack of Creativity
The less you sleep, the less creative you’ll feel. When experiencing a lack of sleep, people often wake up feeling tired and less motivated to perform daily tasks.
Although we’ve all heard that some well-known people prefer to sleep less so that they can focus better on their work, it’s reported that lack of sleep can influence cognitive processes, thus obstructing creativity.
Risk of Accidents
The feeling of drowsiness that accompanies lack of sleep can also influence our ability to drive. When a person is well-rested, their senses are heightened and they’re less prone to get into car accidents.
Contrary to this, people with sleep deprivation are more likely to get into accidents. Actually, people who sleep less are worse drivers than intoxicated drivers.

Weight Gain and Obesity
Something that a lot of people don’t link with sleep deprivation is weight gain and obesity. However, it’s reported that about 5% of obesity is due to lack of sleep. In addition, sleep deprivation can lead to serious medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes.
It’s said that lack of sleep is associated with an increase in hunger. By contrast, if you sleep eight to nine hours a day, you’re less prone to experience an increase in your appetite.
Skin Aging
Some of the side-effects of lack of sleep can be more prominently seen. One of these is skin aging.
By getting less sleep than necessary, you may notice puffiness and dark circles under your eyes, as well as an increase in wrinkles and fine lines. Therefore, the more rested you are, the better your overall health will be.
Bottom Line
Getting the right amount of sleep is integral for your overall health. Although this can often be due to certain sleep-related disorders, many people intentionally choose to sleep less rather than more. If you don’t know what sleep deprivation is or wondering if you are truly sleep-deprived, please check out this article from Natasha Nikolova that will help you identify the characteristics of sleep deprivation and what you can do to correct it (including see a doctor). Her article is helpful.
However, although you might be able to get more done if you sleep less, most of the time, it’s not worth it to damage your health in the process. Here you can also find some great tips for getting more sleep.
