“OSCAR GLITZ & GLAM” Gowns, Jewels, Hair & Make-up”
by
DENNIS STOKELY, LA-STORY Contributing Editor,
The 92nd Academy Awards aired Sunday, LIVE, from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The eyes of the world were focused, from head-to-toe, on every starlet that glided down the Red Carpet.
Here are my “HITS” & “MISSES” from the Super Bowl of awards season.
“HITS”
FLORENCE PUGH
Hollywood is always looking for the next big thing and Florence Pugh just might be it! Her first Oscar red-carpet was a huge success. Florence floors the competition in this show-stopping teal Louis Vuitton high-low gown. Her intricate updo is achieved by combining several small sections of hair and knotting them on the top of her head. Her matte lips, alabaster skin and smokey eyes are radiant!
Florence looks hip and very on-trend.
JANELLE MONAE
Always pushing the fashion envelope, Janelle is never disappointing. Her “Star Wars”-inspired architectural wonder of a Ralph Lauren Collection gown is a marvel in dressmaking. With over 168,000 Swarovski crystals, each hand-sewn, she is certainly the glitziest gal of the night! Her matching hood is draped perfectly to expose her side-swept bang that frames her smoldering eyes and ravishing red ruby lips.
This look makes it official, Janelle has cemented her reputation for being a “powerhouse” on any Red Carpet she walks.
PENELOPE CRUZ
Referencing 90’s glam, her make-up artist, Hung Vanngo, used over 20 Lancome’ products worth over $500 to achieve her bronze skin-tone and salmon-hued lips. Her vintage Chanel gown reads very modern with her sleek, pin-straight hair. Her mega-watt smile is certainly the “piece de resistance!”
Penelope floats down the Red Carpet looking young, happy and very expensive!
CYNTHIA ERIVO
Using a suite of Louboutin polishes, Cynthia’s nails were a poignant and playful nod to Harriet Tubman. CardiB has been “all-in” with the craze in elaborate nails for years, but Cynthia’s fingers are the next level!
Her blinding-white Atelier Versace gown is perfection.
A super-short and platinum hairdo and her flawless make-up with nude lips make this highly-styled look read effortless and modern.
SCARLETT JOHANSSON
A 21st-century goddess! Scarlett stuns the Red Carpet in this custom champagne Oscar de la Renta masterpiece. The bustier-bodice with draped fringe is a couture vision perfectly executed. A simple french-twist hairstyle with a loose and deconstructed texture gives her an edgy and current vibe. Of course, wearing over $2.5 million in Forevermark diamond jewelry and having exquisitely applied
make-up, Scarlett is setting the bar very high for every wannabe siren out there!
REGINA KING
Custom Versace and Harry Winston – Regina King has never looked better! Appearing as a presenter for the Oscar telecast, Regina was trending as one of the “favorite looks” from the moment she stepped onto the Red Carpet. With the jewels and gown center stage, her style team made a terrific decision to go soft-glam with her make-up with an almost-there pink cheek and sleek and slick hair.
This might go down as the “BEST” look of her long and illustrious career, kudos Regina!
“MISSES”
LAURA DERN
Laura is usually so fabulous on any Red Carpet. Hence, she is immediately forgiven for making this fashion-faux-pas on Hollywood’s biggest night. From head-to-toe, this look is a big “miss.” The dangling fringe has a “Vegas-lamp” energy on this custom pink and black Armani gown. A Twitter post was asking if her stylist secretly hates her, ouch!
We still LOVE Laura and she will surely be back to her ultra-glamorous self in a Hollywood minute — we’re sure of it!
SAOIRSE RONAN
This is a rare miss for Ronan. This Gucci gown was stunning on the runway in Milan, but it did not translate well to the Red Carpet. On the upside, her hairstyle, with a full band and face-framing tendrils, is super cute, and the over-sized earrings are perfect.
KRISTIN WIIG
Social media is having a field day with comments about Wiig’s dress. Among the trending descriptions: “lasagna” and toothbrush.” Wiig’s Oscar appearance with Maya Rudolph was a big hit, but her hair was a flop. The dark roots and oily texture make her style too severe. However, her talent will survive this Red Carpet blunder. Expect to see her on the carpet for years to come.
