Just about everyone I know (both colleagues and personal friends) are talking about how much they need a hair cut, a touch-up on their roots; or they are desperate to get into their hairstylist’s chair because they look terribly “undone” when it comes to their personal hairstyle. We are all WAITING for our state or local governments to open up salons so that we all can get that personal grooming “update”- whether it’s a haircut, roots, highlights, or change in style– and this goes for women AND men. It makes me wonder why I can’t just get someone to come to my house and do my hair– except that updating my roots, adding in more contrasting streaks as well as a haircut means that someone would have to be pretty much a mobile hair salon. Do you know anyone like that?
It’s not uncommon to see hairstylists traveling on PR junkets for actors or on tour with various singers. Whether it’s NYC or Los Angeles, hairstylists are often booked to visit a celebrity in their home or in the hotel if they are on tour. It’s pretty common according to many of the hairstylists I know (and I must have interviewed at least 50 hairstylists since 2000!)
Dennis Stokely on set!
One of my good friends, Dennis Stokely is a mobile hairstylist- and he’s been doing it since the 1990s! Stokely started making house calls, in the mid-90s, in NYC while working as an assistant at the Frederic Fekkai salon. Dennis has been a “mobile hairstylist” for several years. When he was doing personal appearances for the various hair brands he was working with or when he was doing personal appearances at “Hair Shows/Conferences” promoting his scissor and hair tool brand, he did hairstyling on the road including cuts, coloring, and “up do’s”.
We all have been in situations when we have wished we could get our hairstylist to visit us at home to fix a hair color mistake or a disastrous trim of your own hair or when you have a big event, and you really want to look perfect.
My personal experience with my hair being done by a celebrity stylist versus me doing it myself is pretty much what you see below in this “Before-After” photo. And I bet you have had a similar experience too!
Wouldn’t we all love to have someone do our hair at home?
And now you can!
LA-Story.com is happy to share this career update directly from Dennis Stokely!
Hairstylist, Dennis Stokely
We could look back in a few years and remember this time as the birth of the “concierge-stylist.” I have been making house calls for years in New York, Los Angeles, actually everywhere that I have lived and worked. After about 5 weeks of sitting at home, a few emails and texts from friends/clients started to trickle in.
I had transitioned out of day-to-day salon work awhile back and all of my POP-UP salon bookings, product endorsement deals, weddings, etc., were suddenly canceled due to the epidemic. I am single, with no children, and both of my parents have passed away. Without much of a support system, flying solo is nothing new to me. But this mess seemed different, so it was a somber, albeit bright and exciting moment when the idea to start providing MOBILE SERVICES popped in my head.
I thought, “Wow, that could be the ultimate in a SOCIAL-DISTANCING hairstyling experience.
One-on-one with me and my client, mask, gloves and all the necessary safety, sanitary and safety precautions.”
“Every hairstylist I know is crying, & I FEEL REBORN! “
