Because dentists are only handling emergencies right now, many of us will miss our routine exam and cleanings. Thankfully, I did my exam early on. However, our DDS has postponed all the general cleanings because of the Pandemic. I don’t blame him for closing his office, but my husband wants to get in the chair to know his teeth are in good condition! He just wants to make sure…though he is seriously diligent about his teeth!
What does this mean for you? You should be extra diligent and make sure your teeth and gums are pristine.
Matt Nejad, DDS,Matt Nejad, DDS, a celebrity dentist in Beverly Hills, suggests these tweaks and tool upgrades to keep your mouth healthy.
Toss your toothbrush
Dr. Nejad suggests replacing your toothbrush (or the head of your electric brush) right now—then do it again in two weeks.
Continue this until we’re on the backside of the COVID-19 crisis.
Note:
If you don’t have extra toothbrushes at home and can’t go out to get more, you can also wash the bristles with soap and water—or better yet, run the brush through the dishwasher to kill germs.
Trade your floss for a Waterpik
“Like any dentist, I’m obviously an advocate of flossing. But a lot of people don’t realize flossing is not the only or even the best option for keeping the space between teeth clean. Using a waterpik before brushing has been shown to clean even more effectively than flossing. I think of a waterpik as a power washer for your teeth. It’s also great for your gums,” says Dr. Nejad.
His pick: Waterpik Whitening Flosser Electric Oral Irrigator, which comes with whitening tablets to remove stubborn stains.
Rinse with fluoride
“If you’re prone to cavities and are not already using a fluoride rinse, consider swishing with one twice a day after brushing,” suggests Dr. Nejad.
Scrape your tongue before bed
“Like manually exfoliating the skin, a tongue scraper removes dead cells and bacteria from the top layers of the tongue. This can improve your breath and reduce the risk of infection. I recommend scraping in the evening, after brushing,” says Dr. Nejad.
The best way to scrape:
–Gently scrub from the tip of the tongue to as far back as you can go without gagging, loosening white residue that sits on top of the tongue.
–Rinse thoroughly.
Dr. Nejad prefers spoon-shape (as opposed to saw-style) scrapers because they’re gentler.
Try: GUM Dual-Action Tongue Cleaner and Scraper.
Tip: After each evening scraping session, wash your tongue scraper with soap and water before putting it away.
LA-Story.com and I (and my family!!!) would like to thank Dr. Nejad for these VERY USEFUL tips. It really will make a difference in your teeth!
