Firewalla contains technologies used by major corporations to secure data and networks, scaled down to fit into a tiny box measuring 1.2 by 1.8 by 1.8 inches. It enhances the protection of antivirus software and security suites. All devices connected to the network can be viewed on the Firewalla app  (link is to Google Play because my phone is Android.  This is available for iPhones too!) and every action taken by those devices is monitored in real-time.

Firewalla provides Cyber-Attack Protection, notifying users of evidence of an attack on the network, and active blocking of known dangerous sites. The app home screen shows network activity for the past 24 hours and allows access to Ad Block, Open Ports, DDNS, Family Protect, VPN Server and Monitoring. Settings can be customized to a user’s preference and there is also a Social Hour feature that turns off access to social media networks for one hour to encourage real-life social interaction.

Setting up Firewalla is simple. All users need to do is download the app to a tablet or smartphone and then scan the QR code on the Firewalla box.

Setup can then be completed manually or through an auto-detect feature in the app. Every device on the network will be detected and any that do not belong can be blocked. Once connected, Firewalla will alert users any time a network device starts using gaming, video,  porn sites, or encounters a dangerous website.

Parental controls allow parents to block sites for children’s devices. Or, if a child connects to a gaming or video site when he or she is supposed to be doing homework the parent can block that site for an hour or deny the child access until the parent revokes the block. For security reasons or parental reasons, every device connected to the network can be customized to block internet access, games, social networks or video.

The VPN feature of Firewalla allows users to take the security of the device with them anywhere. Once the VPN is set up, users can use their device to log into their home network from any location outside the home. All activity on the device is then encrypted and the user will be able to continue to access notifications about home network activity securely.

There are two versions of the Firewalla device. The red Firewalla ($109) is designed for home use with internet speeds under 100 mbps and less than 30 to 50 connected devices on the network.

The blue Firewalla ($179) is optimized for power and speed, handling internet speeds around 500 mbps, and is made for professional and business users.
