Mezcla is the “new kid on the block” in the protein bar arena. Yes, there’s lots of competition – but Mezcla is different and the founders have done everything possible to make this brand stand out as a healthy, tasty protein bar with a recognizable image!

I was sent 3 Mezcla Protein Bars: one of each flavor for me to “test drive” (give it a taste test!). I featured Mezcla Protein Bars in a post that launched on August 11. Visit that post if you want to learn the background of these plant-based protein bars. They are different from every other protein bar I have ever tasted! And it’s very likely this would be my first choice for a protein bar (and very likely my ONLY choice) because it has a staying power, the flavors are really interesting and taste really good.
The protein bars helped me assess the flavor profile as well as the texture profile of these protein bars. I have tried many protein bars from other brands and either their taste seems to have chemical like flavors so that the flavor doesn’t taste authentic to the labeled flavor OR the texture feels odd to me. I have tried some that the flavor was ok, but the texture didn’t work for me. I can’t explain it. I would take a couple of bites and then toss it. Protein bars have not been part of my diet for more than 10 years. Because I was able to get samples, I was able to find out that Mezcla protein bars are very different and would be something I would eat. The samples make the review possible because without the samples, the review would not be honest or authentic.
REVIEW:
If you like matcha, this is the protein bar for you. This protein bar has a subtle flavor profile. The pea crisps are the source of the protein
but also give the protein bar its unique texture. It’s chewy and it tastes good. It’s a satisfying “chew” and you will feel full after you finish it.
I found that for me, I couldn’t finish any of these protein bars because the formulation of the recipe provides a lot of texture and flavor. I found each one very satisfying and I had to try each on a different day because I didn’t want to mix up the flavor profiles. Eating 1/2 of the bar was enough to keep me satisfied both as a healthy snack and also in the flavor department.
Peruvian Cocoa Peanut Butter
Review:
I am a chocolate fan so this Peruvian Cocoa Peanut Butter bar was both something I was excited to try, but also I was hesitant because I don’t like most peanut butter products. However, the Mezcla Peruvian Cocoa Peanut Butter Bar has more texture than I realized and the peanut butter flavor was more peanut butter than any peanut butter in a jar. I found this bar had a great amount of texture thanks to the pea crisps. The cocoa is authentic and has soft cocoa flavor. It doesn’t scream “peanut butter” or “chocolate”, it’s softer and more sophisticated. That said, I found that this bar is pretty hefty in the satisfaction department and I ate the least of this one: not because I didn’t like it. I did like it but it was so satisfying that I only ate 1/3 of the bar in my first run of the taste test. The flavor has the delicate chocolate cocoa taste as well as a rich but not overwhelming peanut butter flavor. I liked this one a lot.
Mexican Chipotle Hot Chocolate
REVIEW:
This protein bar flavor is my favorite but it’s the one I ate the least of it, because when they say CHIPOTLE, they aren’t kidding. There are ground chili peppers in it, so there is a real spicy kick to this protein bar. I love the chocolate flavor. The texture is just like the other two– a distinct texture that you chew and then the chili flavor comes out and it can wake up your tastebuds and your mouth as a whole. I had to space this one out. I found the flavor was long-lasting so you really do feel like you ate something with Mexican chocolate. This will always be my first choice but it will be a longer-lasting protein bar than the other two because of the chili flavor!
