Must-have Tech Gadgets to Make Working from Home More Comfortable
By Naomi Shaw
Working from home might sound like the perfect change for many people, but there are challenges you likely didn’t consider. When you transition to working from home, you have the time to set up a home office and get everything you need to be successful. However, many people did not have the time to prepare and started working from home without the proper setup. Now that millions of people are working from home, it is time to upgrade your setup so working from home is more comfortable. By adding a few gadgets and essentials, you can be comfortable and productive while working from home without breaking the bank.
Tune Out The World
When you are working in a traditional office, there are few distractions to worry about. You don’t have to listen to your housemates play a movie in the other room, there are no pets wanting attention, and there are no house chores to entice you away from work. Working from home adds all of those distractions to the mix and can make it much harder to stay focused during work hours. To keep yourself on track and avoid distractions, grab a pair of wireless headphones to help you tune out some distractions without fighting wires or connections.
Sony Noise-Cancelling Headphones (Amazon) $28
Put on some music, a podcast, or listen to an audiobook to drown out bothersome audio around you. Listening to music can help you focus while limiting distractions so you can power through work without being sidetracked. Headphones are useful for more than just work too. Listen to videos without disturbing the people around you or play your favorite game late into the night without irritating neighbors. Investing in a good pair of headphones will help you during work and will also help you enjoy leisure time when work is done for the day.
Better Work Station
One of the critical parts of working from home is your home desk. It may be tempting to work from bed, but this will drag down your productivity and might complicate how you view bedtime vs. work time. Take the time to make a proper workspace while you are working from home.
Invest in a solid desk and chair at a minimum. If you are working from a laptop, look into a dock so you can connect your laptop to a larger display. Laptops are great for mobility, but bad for your eyes and back to hunch over all day. 27” monitors are inexpensive and are worth the investment to make working from home more comfortable.
Take Care Of Your Body
Typing is an essential skill in modern work life, but it can be detrimental to your body. Repetitive stress injuries are relatively common in people who perform the same motions over and over for long periods of time. While RSIs are common, they can cause severe pain and damage that may require surgery. Typing is classed as a repetitive motion, and it can take a toll on your wrists if you don’t take precautions. Find a mousepad and keyboard with a wrist rest, so your wrists will not feel the pain of typing all day. Protecting your wrists is particularly essential if you use a computer in your free time after work, as that only adds to the repetition. You can find mousepads with a wrist rest in a variety of designs, sizes, and patterns, so you can find one to suit your needs. There are magnetic wrist rests for keyboards that will snap onto some keyboards while others have built-in wrist rests. Keyboards with wrist rests might sport a higher price tag, but it is worth the cost to protect your body from damage.
Working from home does not come with the given set up like working in an office.
–You must take the time to make a comfortable workspace.
–Use headphones to tune out distractions or bothersome noise with helpful music while you work to stay focused. –Build a better work station with a proper desk, chair, and full-size monitor to supplement your laptop.
–Look for wrist rests on mouse pads and keyboards to protect your wrists.
–Do not skimp on your work from home setup; invest in gear and equipment to make working from home as comfortable and productive as possible.
