CA Filmmaker Kalia Love Jones Talks About Her Film “The Power of Hope”!

We like to see women making their mark in the film industry and their influences on society. Kalia Love Jones is a remarkable young woman who is carving out her own lane when it comes to film and animation.

Kalia Love Jones!

Kalia Love Jones is a filmmaker who seeks to empower others. Her first animated short film, “The Power of Hope” was inspired by a Michelle Obama speech. This animated film tells the inspirational story of a young woman with big dreams. An aspiring architect feels helpless when her mother falls ill, but moved by the words of Michelle Obama, she finds the will to persevere and bring her dreams to life. “The Power of Hope” animated short film was written, directed, and produced by Kalia Love Jones.

Here is a Q&A piece with the Santa Clarita, California filmmaker Kalia Love Jones.

Question:  What inspired you to make this film?

Kalia Love Jones (KLJ):

It was just a feeling that I knew it was time for me to make my first animated film. My main goal for “The Power of Hope” animated short film is to inspire more diversity and women in filmmaking as well as inspire young women just like me to consider a career in animation.

Question:  Who are the people that inspired you and motivated you to follow your dream?  Who made you decide to become a director and filmmaker?

KLJ:

I’m inspired by so many people in filmmaking. During the end credits of my film I pay homage to some of the people who inspire me like Ava DuVernay, Debbie Allen, and Oprah Winfrey. I think my main inspiration has to be Michelle Obama. She has the confidence, beauty and intelligence that is so inspiring to people all over the world.

Question: In terms of screenings, where has the film been screened at?

KLJ:

The “Power of Hope” has been screened at Urbanworld Film Festival, LA Shorts International Film Festival and at the HollyShorts Film Festival. All are Academy Awards qualifying Film Festivals.

Question: Is there anything you hope people take away from this film?

KLJ:

I hope people are able to take hope and inspiration from this film. I hope when someone watches this film they feel confident and can see themselves reaching their goals the same way the main character does in “The Power of Hope” animated short film. I want people to feel a connection to the main character and look at her and say she looks like me. Representation is so important these days. I really hope that a little girl watches my film, sees a young black woman as the director and knows she has a place and a voice in the industry.

KLJ:

I have so many ideas I’d love to see on screen and I hope that “The Power of Hope” animated short film can open some doors for me. But my dream job would be to direct “Frozone” a spin-off of “The Incredibles” movies. Sam Jackson if you’re reading this…Let’s make it happen!
