Beauty and Health Tips to Look Your Best for the Holidays
by Naomi Shaw
This year, when stress levels are a little bit higher, trying to plan a fun and memorable holiday season can be challenging. While making time to buy presents, connecting with loved ones, and prepping the home, our own self-care routines are quickly forgotten. Here are some easy tips to keep you looking (and feeling) your best this holiday season.
Keep Your Body Hydrated Through the Holidays

Keep drinking water even though the sun isn’t always out. Our bodies tend to not register dehydration as well during the winter months as they would in the summer months. Dehydration can actually dry out the mucous membranes in your lungs and sinuses reducing their ability to protect you from infections. Additionally, our salt intake usually increases during the winter with comfort foods and holiday parties. Flushing out some of the excess sodium will reduce bloating. Drink plenty of water with every meal as well as before bed to help your body recover overnight.

One of the best things about the holiday season is the tasty treats and hearty home-cooked meals. Everyone’s body responds differently, but a sudden increase in processed, high-fat, and high-sugar foods can leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable instead of enjoying time off with family and friends. Choose your drinks wisely and swap out your favorite syrupy cocktails with a lighter alternative, such as a spirit, a sparkling water mixer, or red wine. Try to avoid yeast and inflammatory meals and opt for anti-candida foods, especially if you suffer from mood swings, seasonal allergies, or frequent digestive issues. The holidays are no time to be putting extra stress on your body.
Take Time For Yourself
Whether it’s a moment of meditation, a hot bath, or a long walk with your favorite tunes, take some time for yourself this season. Running around and prepping to make the most of the holidays is extra stressful this year amid a national pandemic. It’s not selfish to set aside some alone time to recover and be more present and positive when spending time with those you love. Adding some aromatherapy candles in the room or essential oil-infused Epsom salts to your bath can enhance your experience.
Nourish Your Skin and Hair

The upcoming harsh weather can take a toll on our bodies, which applies to all hair and skin types. Harsh winter air makes it one of the best times to try an all-natural or DIY hair mask to keep your locks shiny and healthy. Your hair is the most fragile when wet so be gentle and pat dry with a towel instead of rubbing, or better yet wrap it in an old T-shirt. If you use a dryer, set it to cool or warm instead of the highest setting.
Having a good skincare regime is an important part of good hygiene and self-care. It doesn’t have to involve anything complicated. Focus on cleansing and most importantly moisturizing. Make a habit of applying a rich moisturizer day and night. A fun facial mask is a great way to complement exfoliation or target specifics for oily or dry skin. If you feel like dressing up, you can still look polished and put together while giving your skin a break. Keep it simple and focus on blending a good concealer on problem areas and bold colorful lip instead of a full glam. For an extra holiday glow, swipe on some rosy highlighter to the tip of your nose and your cheekbones.
Maintain An Exercise Routine.

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to check things off your holiday prep list, but try to keep as active as possible leading up to the holidays. Getting active at least three times a week will help both keep your body healthy and your mind clear. This doesn’t mean spending all your time in the gym. There are plenty of low-impact, home workout options you can start your day with, like P.Volve. Sometimes exercise feels like a chore, but usually the body’s release of endorphins will leave you in a better, more energized mood afterward. Keeping up some form of regular exercise will also balance your body’s level of stress hormones. Even getting out for a lunchtime walk in the fresh air will do you more good than you realize.
