Lark Lennox ‘s Commentary:
I’d like to share some DOs & DON’Ts for how to bring our lost sheep back to the formerly-United States of America.
–DO keep your eyes on the prize. The prize is e pluribus unum, “out of many, one,” the motto of the United States of America. If we don’t share that goal, we may as well give up now.
–DON’T resort to “whataboutism,” or, as I refer to it, “yabbut, yabbut, yabbut.” For example, “Yabbut the Democrats…” or “Yabbut, when the BLM people did it…”
–DO understand that, when the truth finally sets in—when your friends, family, and neighbors realize how horribly they’ve been lied to and misled—they will need time to process the loss of something they sincerely believed.
–DON’T mock them if they need to make their way through Elisabeth Kubler Ross’s five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, acceptance.
–DO try to show compassion and empathy. Imagine how you would feel if you were experiencing a 180-degree shift in your world view.
–DO use the word “lie” sparingly. With gentle guidance, all but the most extreme Trump followers will understand—and feel foolish—when they realize they’ve been lied to for years. At the extreme, some people (i.e., avowed racists and anti-Semites) will never change. DON’T waste your time on them! Their Confederate battle flags will not be replaced by rainbow banners. Swastika tattoos will never be covered over with peace signs.
–DON’T be condescending. I read and listen to commentators using words that aren’t in most people’s daily vocabulary. It just makes sense to use language that doesn’t seem deliberately intended to make people feel stupid. Whether or not you are preaching to the choir, that’s not a good way to make friends or influence people.
–DO take human bites! It goes back to that “eyes on the prize” concept. Your goal is not to turn someone into a political doppelganger of yourself. It’s not your place to convert others to your point of view. Your objective is to guide others away from years of indoctrination into the cult of personality, and instead, illuminate a path to a reality that allows for differing viewpoints.
–DON’T confuse personal viewpoints with verifiable facts. As NY State Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said, ”Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.” Try to remember which is which.
–DO remember that the MAGA crowd was intentionally, skillfully and brilliantly duped by politicians and conmen who have no morals and zero integrity. Raise your hand if that has never happened to you.
—As the mother of my old friend, Bill Fifer, used to tell us, “Be patient, be gentle, be kind.”
