D.B. Leighton returns with a poem that in my estimation seems to be more like a story.. prose that is trying to hold back emotions. While there is rhyme and rhythm, the words (or lyrics) seem to tell a story that’s both melancholy as well as informative. The voice of the poem seems to be holding back emotions that still leak in spots. And the unraveling of the story comes in like a freight train hitting the brakes at the last minute.
Like Blood from a Stone
by DB Leighton
Hey Jason, this is Casey,
I’ve been reading all your posts.
While your query’s well regarded,
I find your steep demand,
to be as hollow as a ghost.
You demand one-string guitar,
but the truth you hide inside yourself,
shows just how far apart we are.
See, the Fender that you posted,
is not the one you owned,
your whole life is a growing fiction,
to match the long procession,
of side- romances you’ve sown.
And I do declare,
while I worked my fingers to the bone,
you sat home in your underwear.
So let’s cut this story to the quick,
let’s make this short and sweet.
One night I crashed a party,
to which I had no invitation,
you never knew the word discreet.
And there you sat,
twanging with your blood red pick,
and tugging on your hat.
But I guess the straw that broke the back,
that final fatal nail,
was the song that you had chosen,
that fabled ditty of Folsom Prison,
of Cash’s pining for the rails.
So I saw red,
and all actions that would follow,
could be better left unsaid.
You see, I told you oh so many times,
my father left when I was eight,
with that same song in the background,
the player’s needle cutting more,
than any album could ever take.
Now, Jason, there are many things,
we regret during our lives,
there are hurtful things we do,
to which no matter of penance,
or apologies will suffice.
But please know this.
Crushing your second-hand guitar,
filled me with eternal bliss.
So in closing to my final post,
before you’re blocked and gone,
keep on dreaming ‘bout that Fender,
from me you won’t get one single cent,
you can’t get blood from a stone.
P.S. Your instrument’s in pieces,
you’ve done worse to love it’s true,
and I’ve left it on your mailbox,
Its growing rust a metaphor,
for the hollow ghost of you.
