This is the latest work from DB Leighton. He’s an amazing writer and even better poet. This poem tells a story and you will feel engaged by it.
Jumper at Silver Bridge
by DB Leighton
It was daybreak sometime just last Friday,
winter’s weak sun pushing up.
Sylvie Parker sat by the window,
drinking instant from out of a cup.
The drudgery seemed to engulf her,
she felt like a sardine in a tin.
Any freedom she had,
became some passing fad,
hope evaporated within.
The view Sylvie had stung her eyes,
a sting that seemed to deepen each day.
Steel girders that rose from the river,
a sense of dread she could not quite convey.
Sylvie’s shift started soon tending bar,
at a hole in the wall they called Wayne’s.
Each day Uncle Joe,
from Clyde, Ohio,
dropped her off down at 2nd and Main.
On this day things got a bit murky,
Uncle Joe had been parked on the curb.
Little did he know Sylvie Parker,
had slipped out the back undisturbed.
Sylvie called for an Uber to take her,
she told the driver to head for the river.
Her conscience cried out,
this was no time to pout,
she only hoped that God could forgive her.
At some point on the bridge Sylvie cried out,
she yelled for the driver to stop.
It was one straight shot to the water,
to climb up one had only to hop.
The driver jumped out to give chase,
others gathered to change Sylvie’s mind.
She stood on the ledge,
so close to the edge,
that forever would soon be defined.
When I read the news the next morning,
the body had still not been found.
I wondered where Sylvie lay floating.
I wondered when souls come unbound.
If we all hurled ourselves into darkness,
no cause for rhyme or for reason,
our existence would become all the meager,
and we’d fade with each passing season.
I wish I’d caught Sylvie in mid-air,
I would hug and tell her all that she’s missed,
for the love that we give,
there’s but one life to live,
and living’s truly too sweet to resist.

Thank you to DB Leighton for this amazing new work. This one caught my eye and my heart.. because it was so “on the edge” as well as having characters that felt real!
