Dr. Heather Rogers Talks about the Real Miracle in Skin Care– Our Skin’s Ability to Heal Itself!

Dr. Heather D. Rogers is all about keeping your skincare routine simple and effective and supporting your skin with the fewest, most effective ingredients possible. However, those with some discretionary income who want to earn extra skincare “brownie points” may want to consider products with peptides, growth factors, stem cells, stem cell extracts that have data behind them to show they help skin combat aging!

Dr. Heather D. Rogers encouraged patients to pare down their routine to just healing essentials, including the following products:
Doctor Rogers RESTORE Face Wash,
–the Face Lotion or Face Cream (depending on your skin type),
–and a zinc-based sunscreen.
She suggested that the Healing Balm be used to care for any area of severe dryness or irritation.
After two weeks, once the skin was healthy again, she advised adding back antioxidants and treatments because your skin is resilient enough to benefit from them.

As these Week One and Week Two before and afters show (see below, more attached), your skin benefits from quality over quantity.
The first photo shows skin inflammation causing both acne (the whiteheads and red papules/pimples) and rosacea (the red patches). With only carefully selected, effective ingredients to support the skin, the inflammation dissipated at the end of the two weeks. The rosacea almost disappeared, and the acne lesions were smaller and fewer.

Week Two

The vast majority of people who use daily skin care products use too many, too often. This is particularly true when our skin is suffering. If your skin is inflamed or irritated, the right thing to do is cut back your regimen to only our healing essentials.
This isn’t easy because we are told there is a miracle cure for everything but the real miracle is our skin’s ability to heal itself when it is appropriately supported. Unfortunately, most skin care products contribute to skin irritation by changing our skin’s pH, stripping it of its natural moisturizing factor, and leaving it more vulnerable to irritating ingredients,” says Dr. Heather D. Rogers, dermatologist, dermatologic surgeon, and founder and CEO, Doctor Rogers RESTORE.

Looking at the woman’s skin at Week Three– the changes are phenomenal!

Week Three

Here are some of Dr. Rogers’ tips when it comes to investing in these creams as part of your skincare routine.

  • Tip #1:
Because these products are an investment, make sure you review the before and after photos and evaluate any supporting data before purchasing them. The good products will always have data to support them. Please don’t spend this kind of money on something that has not been shown to improve the skin.

  • Tip #2:
Plant stem cells do nothing for your skin except hydrate it. They cannot “communicate” with human stem cells and signal repair. However, plant stem cell extracts do have peptides that can encourage repair on a cellular level if they are well-formulated. Always read the fine print!

  • Tip #3:
Do not forgo a zinc-based sunscreen, an antioxidant serum, and a nighttime turnover treatment product like Retin A or glycolic acid to buy a product with peptides, growth factors, stem cells, or stem cell extracts. Sunscreen, antioxidants, Retin A, and certain acids are more important and have more data to show that they slow down the aging process. Adding in peptides is extra credit. You need to follow a consistent skincare regimen that protects your skin from sun damage and environmental stressors and promotes cell turnover first.

  • Tip #4:
For your skin to give you the best results possible from any of these active products, it needs to be healthy and ready to work. This is why your daily skin care essentials must be made to support your skin using only ingredients your skin can benefit from. I made Doctor Rogers RESTORE for this reason and to ensure people’s foundational skin care is free of cheap filler ingredients, fragrance, and other common irritants.

In terms of product recommendations, Dr. Rogers uses the following products:

–SENTÉ Dermal Repair Cream ($164) daily even around her eyes, making her skin more resilient.

Alastin Skin Nectar ($195) specifically for her post-laser patients, shown in studies to help heal the skin more rapidly.

Other options include  Isdin’s Hydralift ($130), which harnesses apple stem cell extracts’ power to promote healthy cell turnover, improving skin firmness, texture, and hydration.

Bio of Dr. Heather D. Rogers:

Heather D. Rogers is a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeon.
Within dermatology, she has a particular interest in the treatment and prevention of skin cancer and scars.

She loves
–making beautiful, hidden scars;
–combating the consequences of too much sun,
–creating the perfect anti-aging treatment regimen for each of her patients…  and it will always include sunscreen!!

Dr. Rogers is a national expert in photodynamic therapy (PDT), coauthoring the 2015 treatment guidelines for the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology. She also created RESTORE, a petroleum-free, and allergen-free balm in response to both her patients’ requests for a petroleum-free ointment to use after skin procedures. Dr. Rogers’ frustration with the unnecessary allergens found in the products currently available and thus she created her own product to help skin heal after in-office treatments!

Thanks to Dr. Rogers for providing all these tips and recommendations. It’s so very easy to buy a slew of products and not know just how to use them and when to use them.  (Heck, I have done just that several times and found out that I was combining products that weren’t compatible. Just be aware of what you are using.)  You don’t need to put a boatload of products on every night, but a basic skincare regimen is a great start as long as you know what to add and what to subtract based on the condition of your skin!
