There’s a couple of new handbag lines that have launched collections. This post is #1 in a series of handbags that are stylish and unique.

The founder of BEHNO BAGS: Shivam Punjya
Shivam Punjya is the founder and creative director of behno.
Punjya founded the brand with the goal of addressing poverty and global health through the textile industry. While pursuing political economics at UC Berkeley, one professor inspired Punjya to look at nontraditional ways to address global issues. Punjya was especially interested in how he could impact women’s and children’s health through social enterprise. After graduating from the program in 2013, Punjya began thinking of how he could use his undergraduate and DGHI experience to bring change to garment factory workers in India. He noted that Indian clothing has a stereotype of being poorly constructed and made in sweatshops. When Punjya learned that the Rana Plaza garment factory collapsed in Bangladesh and killed more than 1,100 people—the vast majority of whom were women—Punjya was ready to take action.
That year, Punjya founded behno, a fashion company based in New York that aims to provide ethically manufactured clothes and showcase a different side of the Indian garment industry. Behno works to understand what textile workers need to live better, healthier lives and then fulfills that need by setting up partnerships between factories and health organizations. Behno has grown quickly; it now works with nine factories in India, most of which are family businesses looking to challenge the system.
This line is much more than just a great line of leather handbags. These are designer bags that also give back to the brand’s employees in India. I love the sleek looks of the collection and the colors look fresh. While I haven’t touched the bags in person, I am betting (based on my significant knowledge of handbags via interviews with various handbag lines) that this line will be very successful. The price points are pretty reasonable for leather handbags!
