Celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena Gets Super-Creative with Mindy Kaling’s Hairstyle for
the 2021 Met Gala Red Carpet with “Better, Not Younger” products.

Wearing a rich blue dress, beautiful shoes, exquisite earrings, and an ornate updo, Mindy Kaling told celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena that, “she felt like royalty.” That would be American royalty, given the theme for tonight’s gala, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” The actress and producer wore an off-the-shoulder Tory Burch gown paired with statement earrings from Ms. Burch’s personal collection that the designer insisted Kaling wear. “With those amazing earrings, we all immediately knew that her hair was going up,” says Mena.
“We didn’t want to go with a traditional chignon or bun or ponytail: too predictable,” says Mena. “It’s been such a long time since we’ve had something fun or exciting to go to that we wanted to do something interesting.”

And did he ever! Mena created a look that was simple and elegant in the front with a stunning sculpture of twists and turns at the back Kaling’s honey-highlighted hair.
“Mindy’s hair can be a bit dry and fine, so I wanted to make sure it would be soft, shiny, and have the most volume possible,” says Mena, who used Better, Not Younger products, a line that addresses the haircare needs of women 40+.
First, he washed her hair with Better, Not Younger Wakeup Call Volumizing Shampoo and followed by the Better, Not Younger Hair Redemption Restorative Butter Masque on her ends.
Then, on wet hair, Mena applied the Better, Not Younger Lift Me Up Hair Thickener from roots to ends, and blew her hair dry with a medium-size round brush. After an all-over misting of Better, Not Younger No Remorse Heat Protection & Taming Spray, Mena curled Kaling’s whole head of hair with a 1¼” curling iron to give it some texture and body.
Then Mena began the wrap session: Leaving two sections out in the front, he worked the strands in back from left-to-right, then right-to-left, twisting, wrapping, and pinning sections of hair, until the last piece was tucked into the nape and secured with a bobby pin. “It looks very complicated, but it’s easier to do than it looks!” says Mena. Then he slowly twisted the front pieces into the style, slipping them into the twists and tucking them in.
Never have we ever seen Mindy look so glam! The finished look is a coif fit for a queen, and the elegant updo, Kaling’s crowning glory.
