The Art and Olfaction Awards Are BACK. Submissions open 11/1 thru 12/11!

As a person who loves fragrances and often writes about them, I have covered the Art and Olfaction Awards several times. The Art and Olfaction Awards are returning in July 2022 in Miami!   This event is so meaningful and is truly a global event.  If you are in Miami, you should get some tickets to the July awards in Miami. You won’t be sorry!

 

Submissions are open for the 8th Art and Olfaction Awards

at the World Perfumery Congress in Miami on July 1, 2022

 

After a year-long Covid-induced hiatus, we are thrilled to announce that the Art and Olfaction Awards (A+OA) are back. For our 8th edition, we continue our mission to honor the very best in artisan and independent perfumery, and experimental work with scent.

Submissions for the 8th annual Art and Olfaction Awards are open between November 1 and December 11, 2021.

As with past years, we are accepting submissions from independent and artisan perfume brands, as well as artists and experimental practitioners with scent. For this 8th edition of the awards, we will accept perfumes from independent companies that have been or will be released to market in the period between  January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021.

In the spirit of bridging communities, the 8th Art and Olfaction Awards take place at the World Perfumery Congress in Miami. On a special evening on July 1, 2022, we’ll take part in a larger celebration of excellence in perfumery at all levels of the industry.

At the 8th Art and Olfaction Awards event, we will announce the winners in four juried categories:
–the Art and Olfaction Artisan Award,
–the Art and Olfaction Independent Award,
— the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent,
— the Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume.

We will additionally announce the winners of the Contribution to Scent Culture Award (honoring a person or entity that has made contributions to public awareness of artisan, independent and experimental practices with scent), as well as the Piesse Award, which will be given to an outstanding person showing proof of exceptional vision with regards to how scent is used, developed, or imagined.

In line with our commitment to furthering global dialogue within the field, the finalists for the 8th Art and Olfaction Awards will be announced at a special press event in March 2022 at Esxence, the pre-eminent fair for independent and artistic perfumery.

Marking a change from past events, for our 8th edition there will be only five finalists  (in the following categories):

–the Art and Olfaction Artisan Award,

the Art and Olfaction Independent Award,

the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent.

All submissions in the Art and Olfaction Artisan Award, the Art and Olfaction Independent Award, and the Aftel Award for Handmade Perfume will be judged blindly, by an international cohort of judges who have themselves shown exceptional dedication to the field of perfumery.

New judges including academic and gallerist Andreas Keller, perfume expert Chi Wai Tang, Writer and evaluator Ida Meister, and independent perfumers John Biebel, Lakenda Wallace, Rubia Chaudri, Julienne Lee, and Maxwell Williams (with more to be announced). Our new judges will serve alongside returning judges including
–evaluator Anahita Mekanik,
–perfumers Sarah Horowitz-Thran, Ashley Eden Kessler, Dana El Masri, Daniel Krasofski, Yosh Han and Kaya Sorhaindo,
–perfume critic Mark Behnke, academic Simon Niedenthal, curator Darin Klein, with more to be announced.

In our nine years of operations, the Art and Olfaction Awards have been proven as an important arbiter of excellence for independent and artisan practitioners with scent. With our anonymized judging and impartial mechanism, the A+OA has become a challenging and rigorous standard for the community.

We are thrilled to launch the eighth edition of this community-driven, community-run event, and we look forward to another year spent assessing, celebrating, and furthering unfettered expression and creative risk in the field of independent perfumery.
