Simple Lifestyle Tips for Better Skin in Honor of Healthy Skin Month!

By Dr. Julie Russak, MD, FAAD, Board-Certified Dermatologist and Founder
of Russak Dermatology Clinic and Russak+ Aesthetic Center

November marks National Healthy Skin Month, which makes a great time to pause and recognize that taking care of your skin year-round is vital. Whether you’re struggling with an ongoing skin condition or just can’t seem to maintain that desirable ‘healthy glow,’ Board-Certified Dermatologist Dr. Julie Russak shares the “top tips” she uses to encourage her patients to practice at home to keep the complexion vibrant and help to restore the natural skin barrier.

  • Reduce Stress:
Stress can take a toll on skin, particularly if you struggle with psoriasis, eczema, or acne. Finding enjoyable stress-relieving activities, like going for a walk, breathing exercises, and practicing regular self-care can manage stress and reduce any inflammation or potential flare-ups.
  • Get Plenty of Fresh Air:
Something as simple as a walk around the neighborhood will provide your skin with the fresh air and rejuvenation it needs. If your skin isn’t getting enough oxygen, it can become more vulnerable to attacks by free radicals and appear duller and more aged.
  • Stay Active:
Exercise promotes healthy blood flow and plumps up skin while providing it with much-needed nutrients and carrying away the toxins. Not to mention that the increased body temperature results in an increase in collagen production, which improves skin elasticity and complexion.
  • Level up in Antioxidants:
Just like clockwork, skin renews itself every 28 days, but how can we maintain glowing skin long-term?
Strengthen the skin barrier with antioxidant-rich products based on skin type and skincare needs
    .
–Vitamin C evens and brightens skin tone while promoting collagen and elastin production.
–Vitamin E helps hydrate and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.
Add lemons, cucumbers, or fresh fruit to your water for a refreshing taste and a natural boost in antioxidants.
  • Find a Good Cleanser:
Be sure to remove makeup and cleanse the face daily to wash away any pollutants or dirt that gathered on the skin throughout the day. Avoid using products with fragrance and dyes as these ingredients can cause skin irritation and uncomfortable reactions.
–Try washing clothes, linens, and masks with a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free detergent such as Arm & Hammer Sensitive Skin, Free & Clear detergent, which is specifically formulated for sensitive skin and dermatologist-tested to help avoid skin irritation and itchiness.
  • Don’t Skip the Moisturizer:
While a hot shower or bath to start or end the day may feel good, hot water dries the skin out. Lower your shower a few degrees to avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and a compromised barrier. Follow any bath or shower with moisturizing products, from face to feet, that work best for your skin type.
  • Don’t Touch Your Face:
Many have a habit of touching their face often, which can be detrimental, especially with COVID-19 concerns. Think about how many surfaces your fingers have encountered throughout the day. Not touching the face reduces the likelihood of spreading bacteria and oil and causing avoidable breakouts. Pay attention to how often you touch your face and remind yourself that you could save yourself from illness – and wrinkles!

“Remember that there is no ‘on-size-fits-all’ to skincare, and it may take some time to find a routine and products that work best for your skin. We all have trouble with our skin at some point in our lives, and it’s totally normal. Try out these tips, and if any skin problems worsen, see a dermatologist for a comprehensive checkup, and be sure to remain aware of any new developments to your skin,” says Dr. Russak.
