10 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

by Ashley Peterson

When it comes to New Years’ resolutions, we’re often quick to say things like we’ll work out more, eat less sugar or spend less money. But, what about when it comes to our homes? That’s right — there are lots of resolutions you can make this New Year’s for your home. Here are some that you should consider making for this year.

  1. Resolve to create a garden.

Gardens are a great way to reduce anxiety and get some much-needed vitamin D. Gardens get you outside in nature, where you spend time exfoliating your skin with soil and plant goodness right there in your backyard. If you’ve ever wanted to start your own garden, resolve to do so this year! Start out small, with some perennials that are hardy and don’t need much maintenance. Add some decor to make your garden inviting, such as sets of garden stones or pavers. Altogether, these pieces will create a beautiful landscape that you’re sure to love.

  2. Resolve to paint the walls.

Sometimes, all a home needs is a fresh coat of paint. Take the new year to put a fresh coat on all the walls in your home, especially if it’s been a few years since you last painted. You’ll want to either patch up and smooth out scuffs and marks on your current paint job or paint over it with an entirely new color so that you can start 100 percent fresh.

  3. Resolve to lower your carbon footprint.

Whether that means installing solar panels or simply lowering the temperature you set your heat at each year, lowering your carbon footprint is just one of many resolutions you can make for your home next year. Start your own recycling program, do fewer loads of laundry and invest in a sustainable closet to really commit to the idea. Finding ways to lower your carbon footprint will make you feel like you’re doing your part to combat climate change and make the world a better place. And if that doesn’t make you feel good, then what will?

      4.  Resolve to build a deck.
If you’ve got a backyard, why not build a deck? Outdoor entertainment space is an absolute must, especially for homeowners who like to entertain. Build a deck either yourself or by hiring a  professional this year. Hang up some string lights, bring in some sturdy outdoor furniture and create an outdoor entertaining space that will make all your friends, family, and neighbors jealous. Build the deck now so that when summer rolls around you can be the go-to entertainment space!

     5. Resolve to add some curb appeal.
While having an outdoor entertainment space in the rear of your home is important, that’s  nothing   compared to what your house looks like from the street! Curb appeal can make or break your property  value in some cases, so having great curb appeal is a must. Whether you paint your siding, power-wash  your driveway or plant a seasonal garden flag, you can easily upgrade the outside of the front of your home in a few easy steps this new year. You’ll have your home looking brand-new in no time!

    6.  Resolve to install some new technology.
New tech in a home is essential to keeping your space up with the times. From smart thermostats to lighting that changes with your TV screen background, there are lots of new gadgets out there that will  make your living experience akin to living on a spaceship or in a science fiction movie. If you’ve never  ventured into the world of home tech, start out small with a home voice device that operates like a speaker as well as a voice-activated search engine. You can ask it to check the weather for you, find out if there are any traffic delays, dim the lights, record TV shows. There isn’t much a home portal or speaker can’t do these days. Then, once you’re comfortable with the portal (or pod, depending on your  preference),  you    can start to incorporate other tech devices into your space. Soon enough,                  your home will look like it belongs in a tech magazine!

    7. Resolve to install a security system this year.
Your home is your sanctuary, and it’s important that you stay safe there. Feeling safe in your own home is absolutely essential, no matter how many people live there. If you don’t have one already, install a security system for your home. Whether you install some cameras around the perimeter of your home or you add  a doorbell with a camera, you can easily create a safe space with just a few simple orders online.

  8. Resolve to add more organizational solutions.
You can never be too organized! It’s important to have a place for everything in your home. Whether that means you install some built-in shelving in your closets or you find some wire baskets for all your throw blankets littered across your couches, more organization solutions  might be just what your home needs this new year. It’s a resolution that you can easily stick to with the right amount of perseverance.

 9. Resolve to change out your decor with the seasons.
It’s easy to let our home decor get stale and unmoving. Instead, resolve this New Year’s to change out your decor with the seasons instead of just the holidays. Of course, that doesn’t mean you need to go removing your furniture and buying new sets every few months. Instead, change out the accent decor! A new set of  candles here, a throw pillow there. Put all those  personalized housewarming gifts to good use by showcasing them throughout different seasons during the year, along with new items you find at antique stores and village thrifts

10.Resolve to do a deep clean in the spring.
Springtime is great for doing a deep cleaning. Clean your house from top to bottom — or bottom to top, whichever you prefer — and clean out any unnecessary clutter while you’re at it. Doing so will give you a fresh start for the remainder of the year. Since spring marks the start of new beginnings, cleaning out your home will be the perfect way for you to symbolize that.
