As the 2022 Olympics begin and we watch the most talented athletes on our screen excel in their respective sports, we realize that most of us will never have their athletic prowess. What we do wonder is, where do they get their determination? How do they thrive under pressure? How do they rise to the occasion when they are nervous? How do they shrug off emotions and keep their head in the game? If we can master what these world-class athletes have learned on track, field, or water and harness them in our own lives, we can get a leg up in our personal or business affairs. Dr. Haley Perlus is a sports and performance Ph.D. who has worked with elite athletes and is an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado lecturing on applied sport and exercise psychology

Dr. Haley Perlus lists some ways you can think and act like an Olympic athlete:

Mental toughness

Mental toughness is one of the most important aspects of having an Olympic mindset. Mental toughness has a psychological edge that helps you cope with being under pressure, dealing with expectations, and remaining focused on the goal through all of it. As you go through life and experience trials and tribulations, you can learn to grow from them and stay mentally strong against what the world throws at you.

Optimism

Having a more optimistic personality tends to be associated with success both at the Olympics and in everyday life. However, the power of optimism does not lie in seeing the world filled with rainbows and butterflies. In actuality, an optimist’s initial response to a situation tends to be as realistic as a pessimist’s. Optimism’s value lies in the motivation it creates to improve one’s life. Optimistic people, for example, are usually proactive and search for a solution to a problem, rather than pessimistic people, who may think there is no hope in finding one.

Knowing how hard to push yourself

Many Olympians grew up in households that modeled strong work ethics their entire lives. But the willingness to turn to hard work, even when anxious to achieve, can occasionally backfire. Many talented Olympians have failed due to working too hard, especially before competing. Such overtraining can lead to injury, poor team coordination, or simply a subpar performance. In general, when striving for any success, you need to be in tune with yourself and know when to rest and allow your body and mind to heal.

Self-awareness

A little self-doubt can go a long way. Self-awareness helps people work on their faults and know their most significant opportunities for failure and success. Being mindful can help you avoid common pitfalls, such as burnout, overworking yourself, and loss of motivation. It also helps keep your ego in check, reminding yourself that none of us are too big to fail.

Healthy Perfectionism

This balances out high standards with flexible thinking. Those who have this are not mired in past mistakes, instead, they learn from them. Unhealthy perfectionists are too centered on control and exhibit all or nothing thinking.

Focus

During the Olympics, some things can go wrong that are out of an athlete’s control. Drama can occur between competitors or from an occurrence in the crowd. That is where focus comes in. Studies suggest that visualization training is comparable to physical training.

Like an Olympian, the more someone has an intense focus on their goal, the more one will be able to tune out anxiety, stress, and distractions. A way to achieve this mindset is to practice meditation and mindfulness regularly.

Search for the fun

Professional athletes train to become both physically and athletically great, but when they learn to have fun, not only do they stay great, they have a better overall experience. So ask yourself, how can you have more fun in your life? More fun at work, with your family and friends, and with your adventures? Even in the toughest times, when life is genuinely challenging, search for fun in the simple things. When you increase your enjoyment, not only will the experience be better, but your performance and overall wellness will be better too.
