National Absinthe Day is March 5! It’s a Great Spirit + Makes Tasty Cocktails!

 

 National Absinthe Day is coming up fast! This is one of those “national cocktail days” that I share with you via this blog.  I find it fun and interesting because the various spirits come up with some interesting cocktails that are relatively new to the  category.  So let’s celebrate National Absinthe Day with Absente Absinthe! As the first absinthe to be sold in the US following the ban in 1912 for over a decade, the brand is dedicated to embracing the history of absinthe. Which is why they still use the 19th century recipe including the original ingredient–wormwood.

On National Absinthe Day, which is observed on March 5, we celebrate the drink known as “the green fairy.” Absinthe originated in Switzerland in the 18th century and rose to popularity in early 20th century France, especially with artists and writers. The drink enjoys a mystique and is often associated with bohemian culture, making it an especially fun drink to enjoy today!

 

–Although some prefer to stick to tradition and follow the ritual method using the absinthe fountain to enjoy the spirit, the green fairy can also be the perfect ingredient to add to any cocktail.

–Made with Grande Absente, the White Elephant is the perfect drink to celebrate the history of the spirit with. Inspired by an Ernest Hemingway short story in which he mentions absinthe, this cocktail embodies the deep history of absinthe.

Ingredients:

3/4 oz Grande Absente

1 oz Magellan Gin 

1 oz Hibiscus Syrup

Garnish: Raspberry & Blackberry

Method:

In a mixing glass add the 3 ingredients,
add several large ice cube blocks to seal in the combined ingredients.
Stir thoroughly for at least 45 seconds until condensation appears on the outside of your mixing glass.
Strain the mix into a chilled short rocks glass holding a single large cube and garnish.

 

This is a bit of an unusual cocktail. The Hibiscus syrup provides a unique flavor. The addition of raspberries and blackberries as a garnish not only gives the cocktail color but if you muddle up a couple of berries and put it in the glass before you pour the cocktail in, the color of the berries will really make the cocktail colorful plus it will taste amazing!
