The Most Popular Fad Diet in Every U.S. State
Going hand in hand with boutique workouts, everyone is always trying the flashiest new fad diet. There was a larger variety of diets that were the most searched for in at least one state than fitness programs, from The Zone Diet, which advises against inflammatory foods and is the most popular diet in Tennessee and Oklahoma, to the 5:2 diet, which encourages standard food consumption five days a week, but restricted consumption the other two, and is the most popular diet in New Jersey and Missouri.
The South Beach Diet, a trendy diet from the early 2000s, is the most popular in Rhode Island, while the Whole30 diet, a food plan that bans certain foods for 30 days, is the most popular diet in Colorado. With all of these different fad diets winning at least one state popularity contest, the biggest surprise to come out of our research might be three titan diet brands, Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, and Atkins, being the most popular diet in just one state each.
The Most Popular Fad Diet Overall
Our nationwide fad diet results are a mixture of various kinds of diets, like keto or paleo, and specific diet brands, like SlimFast or Atkins. As you might expect, the kinds of diets were more popular than specific diet brands, as the former is much more general (this might explain the previously mentioned low search results garnered by big names like Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, and Atkins). However, there is one exception: SlimFast.
SlimFast dates all the way back to the late 1970s and, after exploding in popularity in the 1980s, it was sold for $2.3 billion in 2000. Yet the brand was again sold, this time to the global nutrition group Glanbia, in 2018 for just $350 million. This begs the question, is SlimFast due for a comeback? Or does the brand simply retain a high level of name recognition and passing interest? Only time will tell.
Both the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting are tied with SlimFast as the most popular fad diets in most states, but the difference lies in their lack of overarching brand. The keto diet is any food plan that attempts to eliminate carbs, forcing the body to burn fat to create any required energy, while intermittent fasting is almost any food plan that focuses on when you eat instead of what you eat.
Surprisingly, the gluten-free diet was the most popular trendy diet in just three states, and the vegan diet did not even crack our top six. But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider some of these diets yourself!
