Check out this great collection of cocktails for this weekend. Strega is a unique spirit and definitely worth trying.. particularly if you want something a bit different. And considering that most of the country is tied up with unpredictable weather, I think that STREGA is absolutely apropos for the “weekend cocktail!”.
What is Strega?
An Italian liqueur that’s a veritable witches’ brew of herbs and spices which speak to the complexity of this gently sweet elixir: Strega.
In case you want a bit more information than the sentence above, here’s a more detailed explanation from the STREGA brand:
Strega Liqueur (Liquore Strega) is an herbal Italian liqueur with a unique flavor and a distinctive bright yellow color. It’s a digestif (or amaro) made from a secret recipe that includes about 70 botanicals, most notably saffron, mint, and juniper berries. It hails from the town of Benevento, Italy and is also known as the “witches liqueur.” A very popular liqueur in Italy, it’s enjoyed on its own or in cocktails and has dedicated fans throughout the world.
Sparkling Strega Cocktail!
INGREDIENTS
1 oz. —Strega Liqueur
1 oz. –Vodka Choose a good quality vodka for this cocktail. It will make a difference!
1 oz —Elderflower Liqueur
1/2 oz –Lime juice
2 oz–Sparkling grapefruit juice
Sprigs of rosemary for garnish
Method:
Add all ingredients to a shaker full of ice and shake well.
Pour into a tumbler
Garnish with fresh rosemary
Lavender Gin Sour!
INGREDIENTS
1 oz. –-Strega Liqueur
1 oz.–Gin ( I would suggest Hendrick’s Gin for this cocktail!)
1/2 oz–Lavender Simple syrup
1/2 oz –Lime juice
1/2– oz–Lemon juice
Method:
Add all ingredients to a shaker and shake well.
Pour into a tumbler with ice cubes
Garnish with slices of lemon and fresh lavender

The Witches’ Coffee

Created by Bryan Dayton, he has used a dark Sumatra coffee and mixes it with saffron-based Strega, aged rum and raw sugar with a molasses flavor. Dayton got very creative and added a bit of Italian Averna to the whipped cream for this coffee drink!
To underscore the rich flavor of dark Sumatra coffee, Bryan Dayton mixes it with aged rum, spicy, saffron-based Strega and molasses-y raw sugar. He even spices up the whipped cream, with bittersweet Italian Averna.

Ingredients:
6 ounces aged rum, preferably Ron Zacapa 23
Averna Cream (see instructions below)
Ingredients for Averna Cream for Witches Coffee!
In a medium chilled bowl, whip 4 ounces chilled heavy cream with 1 ounce Averna amaro and 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar until soft peaks form. Use the cream immediately. Makes enough for 4 drinks
These three cocktails are not “cookie-cutter” cocktails. Each has a unique flavor profile. If you are hesitant about the Strega, I would suggest that you buy a small bottle of Strega and try it in a couple of cocktails (like Witches Coffee). You will be surprised how good it can be!
