Hotel Maya’s ‘Maya-Animals’ Experience celebrates with ‘Lucy the Owl’ on October 16
Hotel Maya presents its 12-month ‘Maya-Animals’ Experience program!
This program highlights animals whose characteristics the Mayans assigned
to their deities during a Fuego Sunday Brunch
To celebrate the “Owl,” which is one of the Mayan animals most popular and powerful symbols in
Mayan mythology and culture, Hotel Maya will host “Lucy the Owl” a real, live animal
experience in the sculpture garden adjacent to Fuego for educational purposes and complimentary
photos on Sunday, October 16 from 12-3 p.m.
The Mayan God of death chose owls as its companion and it was believed wisdom and clairvoyance
were characteristics of the owl. Owls were said to be harbingers of death by the Mayans. They were night
guardians of the jungle and if one flew by your home, someone would die within two weeks.
In the spirit of honoring these powerful symbols of Mayan mythology and culture, Hotel Maya is
featuring a different Mayan animal once a month during Sunday brunch from 12-3 p.m.
The “Maya-Animals” Experience includes live dance performances, music, storytelling, animal
demonstrations, lectures, and many other exciting events for both kids and adults to enjoy.
“This has been a tremendous year of celebrating ‘Maya-Animals’ and we close the program with
‘Lucy the Owl,’ followed by a falcon in November and a festive reindeer in December,” said Greg
Guthrie, General Manager at Hotel Maya – a DoubleTree by Hilton. “’Maya-Animals’ continues
to be a unique way to share Mayan culture with our guests and team members each month.”
Guests and visitors are encouraged to eat, drink and celebrate the Mayan culture while enjoying brunch
and visit with “Lucy the Owl!”

Stevie’s Note:
I have been to Fuego many times. I love the location of the Hotel because it’s water-front
on a peninsula that is across from the city of Long Beach. The views are incredible, the
food is fabulous and the cocktails are very tasty. Every time I have been to Hotel Maya
— whether for a meeting or for a meal, it’s been a great experience!
