In Defense of Animals started Respect for Fish Day in 2020 to raise awareness about the plight of fish — who are among the most cruelly treated and exploited animals on Earth — and change consumer behaviors and policies.
This year the awareness day is focused on the hazards of fish farming, an industry that takes billions of animal lives per year. Fish farming operations have detrimental effects on human health, aquatic ecosystems, and the wild animals who live there. Fish have no protections under existing animal cruelty laws to shield them from the brutal conditions they endure throughout their entire lives in crowded pens, during transport, or when they are killed; they may be suffocated, frozen to death or butchered while fully conscious.
“We are riding a wave of support from mermaids who literally connect the dots between humans and fish and that is what Respect for Fish Day is all about! Eating plant-based fish tacos is one way we can conserve fish, protect them from suffering, and advocate for clean oceans. Come down to Santa Monica beach and grab yourself a free fishless taco, have fun posing with the mermaids, and share a positive message for fish!” said Katie Nolan, Respect for Fish Campaigner at In Defense of Animals.
Fish are the most commonly farmed animals on the planet. Farmed fish are confined in overcrowded ponds, or in underwater cages in natural bodies of water. Farmed fish are genetically selected to grow much faster than their wild counterparts, which weakens their immune systems and makes them susceptible to health problems including deafness and bent spines.
Fish farming has significant impacts on the health of humans and the environment as well. Offshore farms often have open-net pens that allow antibiotics, pesticides, and other chemicals to flow freely into the surrounding body of water. The transfer of bacteria and diseases can be detrimental to wild fish populations, and other contaminants cause algal blooms and ocean dead zones. Fish farm nets pose the additional threat of entangling wild animals.
To advocate against all of this, In Defense of Animals brought in the help of some ocean experts: mermaids. For Taco Tuesday, mermaids in full regalia will help give out fish-free tacos and pose for photos to promote clean oceans and respect for fish. Passersby can join the fun taking selfies with a mermaid tail photo stand-in against a colorful undersea backdrop.
“We’re excited to be celebrating another Respect for Fish Day with such great partners who are helping us encourage more people to consider fish as sentient beings, and build a more just and sustainable food system,” said Lisa Levinson, Campaigns Director at In Defense of Animals. “Fish farms are the opposite of a solution. We hope to change more hearts and minds about consuming fish with some delicious plant-based alternatives.”
