In light of current events in the Middle East and Israel, the Israeli election which is being held on 9/17 (and in Israel, it’s already 5:15 AM on 9/17 in Israel) as I writing this at 7:15 PM on 9/16. David Rubin (former Mayor of Shiloh, Israel) knows quite a bit about the political factions, perspectives of current and past political ideologies and perspectives of the various Israeli political factions. As a geographic reference, Shiloh is almost directly north of Jerusalem, almost directly east of Tel Aviv in the West Bank area of Israel. Israeli Election Commentary and Analysis

Today (Sept. 17, 2019) Israelis will go to the polls in a tense rematch election that could end the career of Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu has leveraged his strong relationship with President Trump to achieve a long list of accomplishments, but polls show he is neck in neck with the Blue and White Party led by Benny Ganz.
Three 11th-hour developments may sway voters in this historic runoff:
1) President Trump’s consideration of a mutual defense pact between Israel and the United States,
2) The attack of Saudi oil fields, widely believed to be masterminded by Iran with Iranian weapons,
3) Netanyahu’s promise to annex portions of the West Bank (a.k.a ancient Samaria).
Former Israeli Mayor David Rubin, author of “Trump and the Jews” has answered some questions about this election.
Questions:
- Who is Netanyahu’s main opponent in this election?
David Rubin:
His main opponent is Benny Gantz, and their two parties are neck and neck in most of the polls, but, paradoxically, Gantz isn’t the main person to watch. - If not Gantz, then whom?
David Rubin:
The main person to watch is Avigdor Liberman, because he leads what appears to be the third-largest party, and therefore, holds the balance of power. - Can you explain to our viewers/listeners what that means?
David Rubin:
Of course. Israel has a rather unwieldy parliamentary system with a whole bunch of smaller parties. It’s a system in which the leader of the most popular party must form a majority coalition by appealing to smaller parties that will join his coalition. Of the smaller parties, Liberman’s appears to be the largest. - Why is Netanyahu so concerned about Liberman?
David Rubin:
Even though Netanyahu’s right-of-center Likud party may again emerge as the largest, he and Liberman have had a very shaky relationship and, even before the election, Liberman has been making a lot of unreasonable demands for his participation in the coalition. - If Prime Minister Netanyahu gets the mandate once again, what will that look like?
David Rubin:
As the leader of the largest party, Netanyahu is likely to get the mandate again to form the coalition. Either Liberman will compromise on his demands or Netanyahu may have to bring in one of the smaller left-of-center parties to get his majority coalition. - Can you contrast and compare the likely impact to Israel and the United States from both possible outcomes leading to new governing coalitions?
David Rubin:
If Liberman joins a Netanyahu government, the coalition would be more aggressive against Iran and the terrorist organizations and might declare Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria (the so-called West Bank), as well. However, if Netanyahu has to bring in a left-wing party to make a majority coalition, there would be constant dissension within the coalition. - Where can people get a copy of your book, “Trump and the Jews”?
