Given that we are on the “holiday track” you will see a series of book reviews coming up including COOK BOOKS and cocktail recipe books! However today’s assortment features one fiction book (for women pretty much) and one each non-fiction for men and for women.
While men often read fiction, the non-fiction books definitely get a guy’s attention. “The Age-Nostic Man, The Secrets of Anti-Aging for Men” is a how-to guide on how to age gracefully but actually feel better than you used to even when you were in your 30’s!
What this book brings to the table is the story of Michael Hogg‘s journey to being tired of aging and what he did and how he found certain tools and activities that actually made him feel better from the inside out- better than he had in his twenties and thirties (according to him). What you can do is read the book and pick and choose the things that are truly do-able for you. IV’s of various anti-oxidants aren’t on most people’s top ten ideas of things to do- but eating better and smarter, being more active, making sure you take good care of yourself from the inside out (and not the reverse) is pretty important.
This is a speedy read and definitely interesting. Would make a great stocking stuffer for the guy in your life!
Michael Hogg’s bio
Practical, funny and downright honest, this is a book that will show you aging gracefully is no longer an option – instead, aging magnificently is a must!
Michael Hogg is a serial entrepreneur with a global track record of success across a number of industries. More recently, he was the global CEO of The Cobra Group of Companies. Over the last decade he was instrumental in driving a change agenda, which lead to a significant growth phase for the Group worldwide. He also masterminded Cobra’s initial series of investments into a number of highly successful publicly listed enterprises.
Having achieved everything he set out to achieve as a CEO, Hogg decided to pursue his passion in anti-aging. For over 10 years, he has been researching and experimenting in anti-aging for men – the result being a biological age of 53 but a medical age of 30 to 35.
This has lead to Hogg incubating the Gen-a business, which is dedicated to raising awareness and providing education to a new generation of men, and to enable them to access a range of age-nostic treatments. This new generation of men will be positioned to achieve the amazing results he has achieved on his own age-nostic journey.

Women’s Non-Fiction/Self-Help
Women are often pelted with self-help books and they sometimes sugar-coat the information if only to reach their intended audience. The woman who wrote this next book didn’t sugar-coat anything and it definitely will resonate with the target person because it will help that specific woman who needs this book!
The Resilient Woman: Unleash Your Personal Power By Challenging Girly Thoughts
‘Girly thoughts’ are being discussed a lot lately, albeit using various lengthy descriptions. The effects of these thoughts have been highlighted by a Facebook executive in her new book, discussed on various television shows, and even demonstrated in a Dove YouTube at: http://bit.ly/11hCsGS that shows how women see themselves in a far less attractive light than a stranger sees them.
Nurturing and making others happy seems to be an ingrained trait in most women. But when a woman is pushing herself too hard, destructive and self-sabotaging ‘girly thoughts’ arise that can wreak havoc on her success, both personally and professionally. Noted psychologist and author Dr. Patricia O’Gorman coined the term ‘girly thoughts’ in her latest book, The Resilient Woman: Mastering the 7 Steps to Personal Power (HCI Books), to describe what happens when a woman ignores her own needs and tries to be everything to everyone.
The key elements of this book are clearly the 7 steps that Dr. O’Gorman talks about and illustrates succinctly. Yes it’s a fast read but re-reading it at different times will provide any woman of any age the way to capture points they might have missed and can work on as they work through the steps and accomplish their personal evolution!
Dr. O’Gorman is clear, concise and brilliant with her tips on how to be the resilient woman, the best of ourselves and much like that DOVE commercial, we often under-estimate ourselves. This is one great book to have and most women I know should be reading it– especially if they have had obstacles in their life that they have yet to overcome or they have managed to overcome them already. This is just one awesome book. NO BS, no coddling here- just straight talk. Be the best of who you are. YOU deserve it . Thank you Dr. O’Gorman!!
Women’s Fiction
Finally we get to fiction but it’s not really so much fiction because it’s a memoir of the author. This book isn’t quite as fast as read as the other two book but there’s lots of detail and dialogue that you want to really “get” on the first read. It’s a woman’s coming of age- when women were getting married at 18 and how this woman actually becomes a woman of means, talent and accomplishing many things that we would all like to do.
The Recipe: Take one controlling father, add three husbands, fold in an assortment of boyfriends and lovers, stir in the Hollywood machine, sprinkle with a touch of promiscuity and serve with forgiveness.
Author Dale Engelson Sessa invites you to sit at her table and enjoy the banquet that she has created in her book, “ And All The Queen’s Men” is a truthful memoir of a woman’s courageous journey to discover herself through various relationships in her life–eloquently penned coming-of-age story of a (not-so) nice Jewish girl, filled with wonderfully descriptive narratives that reflect the various times and lifestyles of LA’s culture.
Alone, driven and searching for decades, Sessa ultimately emerges as an emotionally empowered woman who reaches for an enduring relationship, one that sets her free from the Pamplona-type chaos that heretofore has consumed her life. Amid all the shadows she has forged in previous relationships, this new awareness illuminates and forgives the restless ghosts of her past.
That’s just the fast synopsis of the book. It’s a great read and starts back in the 60’s! Sessa captures the essence of LA’s upscale lifestyle without sparing herself from any revelations or a-ha moments. The process of writing this book must have been pretty intense and the resilience that the character demonstrates shows you what Sessa has learned in her life over several decades, marriages and relationships. Because this is a memoir, Sessa shows us the character’s true self– warts, flaws and all and doesn’t sugarcoat anything in the process.
An interesting gutsy read from a woman who has been through a lot in her life and is willing to show you what she has done. (KUDOS! Definitely worth the read!)

Leslie, I have edited your reply down. If you want to review that book for my blog, bring it on! I welcome that sort of content. However when I have featured an author, I don’t want to distract the audience from that attention. It has nothing to do with sponsorship because generally — as in this case – there is none.
