Barbie Celebrates 50 @ NYFW!!What a Birthday Party for Nancy Lichtenstein!

It’s not a big duh to realize I didn’t make it to NYFW this year. (*maybe next?) Thanksfully, Nancy Lichtenstein returns for another round of her fun and insightful spin on NY’s fashion runways and life inside and outside the tents!

Robert Best at Bloomingdale’s to Celebrate Barbie’s 50th Anniversary

It’s been my experience that New York Fashion Week kicks off with a sighting of a Project Runway alumni, but this one was off-site as I ran over to Bloomies with Gina Keller, the only other person I know besides me who seriously considered registering at a shoe store for engagement presents. She’s married now and living in Manhattan so she’s my go-to girl for a fashion accomplice.

Bloomies had an autograph signing with Robert Best, season 3 PR runner up head designer for Barbie, who is celebrating her 50th anniversary at Fashion Week with a variety of events, including a runway show in the Big Tent featuring such fashion luminaries as Anna Sui, Rachel Roy, Michael Kors, Donna Karan, Badgley Mischka and even the inimitable Diane von Furstenberg.

Now, I have personally have a love-hate relationship with Barbie. I’m not keen on her impossible body standards and I’m partially convinced that they led to the trend of breast implants, which as far as I’m concerned are just body mutilation with society’s stamp of approval. Repeat after me–natural is beautiful, whatever the size!

However, it’s true that Barbie was the first taste of glamour for most of us, and she instills the idea in little girls that they can succeed at all of their dreams, whether they’re as frivolous as being a fashion model or as formidable as being a surgeon. It’s also heartening to learn that Barbie gave a lot of little boys the courage to pursue their dreams as fashion designer.

In this vein, my love for Robert Best is entirely pure! He was my favorite male designer on Season 3 (read later in the week to find out who I thought should win) and he’s an absolute doll in person (pun intended). Robert thinks that the best thing about Barbie is she’s pure fantasy–a bit of escapism for all of us to enjoy during troubled times

.
Thank you to Nancy Lichtenstein for her amazing reportage. I am so jealous that someone else got to cover Barbie.. I am *pink* with envy!
