S Darko, Sequel to Donnie Darko, Drops on DVD!

S Darko ( part of the Donnie Darko series) is now out on DVD and it fails to live up to the reputation of the Darko series. While Donnie Darko was hard to follow at least there were no expectations to it. With Donnie Darko playing against a blank slate, it’s tolerable. S Darko isn’t. I watched 3/4 of the film and still didn’t get what was going on except that some girl is tragically clueless about the friends she chooses and forgives them because either she really cares about them or she needs them She accepts their abuse and bemused indulgences with gratitude. Either way, they don’t need her. Her character isn’t clearly defined but maybe that’s the point of the entire movie.

It winds up that is movie is ultimately about time travel *(yawn, could we have gotten to this part faster with some serious editing?).
The acting is uneven because the script is uneven. One actor looks like Rob Patton meets James Dean and acts like it too. Brianna Evigan is uneven as well. The plot line has her playing BFF and bitchy girl and not sure which way she is going.
If these characters were all supposed to be 18 years old, then the movie makes more sense. If you are over the age of 30, you won’t like this much because you would keep asking yourself “why” is he/she/it doing this– or taking this course of action.

FYI; Here’s a link the the LA Times review by Jen Chaney which is spot on.
Here’s the high point of what Cheney said about the S Darko DVD

Visually, director Chris Fisher and cinematographer Marvin V. Rush do a lovely job of capturing the endless blue skies and mountainous landscapes of Utah, where the film was shot. They also have assembled an eclectic, interesting cast.
Now, the bad news: The story “S. Darko” tells is just as derivative and empty as all those skeptical bloggers and their commenters feared.

If you feel the need to watch this, you can buy this at Amazon.com here . However I wouldn’t waste the money. Just rent the flick on Netflix.com and call it a day.
My take: skip it. It’s a waste of time, water and popcorn. Better to watch something entirely different.
