NYFW 2010: Nancy Lichtenstein Talks about Project Runway's Althea Harper's Collection

Nancy Lichtenstein wraps up her NYFW travels with a vision of Althea Harper from the front row no less! Not everyone gets there and Nancy got a great view of this Project Runway veteran.

My last stop at New York Fashion Week was Althea Harper, last season’s Project Runway runner up. The show was at an art gallery in Chelsea, and on-hand were such other Project Runway alumni as Epperson who graciously agreed to take a picture with me, and here I have to put a plug my favorite foundation, Makeup Forever HD Invisible Cover. I was terrified to look at the pic which was taken after a bad night’s sleep and a six hour stint of trudging in and around Bryant Park, but the foundation not only held up, it gave me a glow (Epperson just looks great naturally).

Logan Neitzel was also there, but as he was scowling for much of the time, I didn’t dare ask for a photo. Do I sense a little jealousy, perhaps? Even more interesting, the winner of the first Models of the Runway show, Kalyn Hemphill was on the runway for Althea!

(Interesting because on PR and models, she was paired with Althea’s rival, Irina Shabayeva, while Althea’s model from the show, Tanisha Harper (no relation), was nowhere to be seen. Kalyn also appeared earlier in the week at Irina’s show.)
After all that running around, it was a relief to be seated in the front row. In the interest of journalistic integrity, I have to admit there was ONLY one row, but I had a great seat. The presentation started with a moment of silence for Alexander McQueen, Althea’s mentor which was a nice touch. (I know fashion is show biz and the show must go on, but it’s been bothering me all week that there was no mention of him on the Fashion Week website.)
Althea’s collection was sophisticated with a real urban vibe; while it did have knitwear accents, it showed growth since Project Runway and a lot of versatility. You could outfit a whole wardrobe out of this line. Standout looks included:
harperfishtail.jpg
a grey one-shouldered gown with a fishtail skirt (everyone’s doing one shouldered and fish-tale but in this fabric with this silhouette it looked fresh)
harpersweetheart.jpg.jpg
a black cocktail dress with sweetheart illusion neckline and cutouts
harperblacksuit.jpg
and a black suit with fierce shoulders and a standup collar.
Hair (severe, glossy chignons) was by Yoiche Tomizawa and makeup by Kristen Arnett featured precise kohl-rimmed eyes and deep plum lips.
This was a collection and a presentation to be proud of (styled by Katharine Polk of Malibu who has also styled Badgley Mischka
Bryant Park, and it was the best I saw at Fashion Week this year). The only real disappointment was that Althea herself didn’t come out to take a bow at the end.

We would like to express our deepest thanks and appreciation for Nancy Lichtenstein’s coverage of NYFW 2010 during a snowstorm. It was not easy getting around the city and it was quite difficult making shows on time– or even when one did, getting in despite rsvp’s and being on the list. The saga continues with a bit more on hair and beauty.
