Newsflash for all the beer-drinkers: Oskar Blues, a highly-respected brewery, is releasing Ten FIDY Imperial Stout, a high octane (10% ABV, up from the original 9% ABV) brew sold in limited supply. Boutique beer bars and restaurants will scarf up the supply fast.Article first published as Colorado’s Oskar Blues Ten FIDY Imperial Stout to Debut in November on Blogcritics.
Snagging a case of cans requires you to find a vendor in one of 25 states and get on a waiting list for the November 1, 2010 release. I checked my location and found a slew of places (over 25 retailers and restaurants) within a 15-minute drive, including one of my favorite restaurants known for their boutique beer offerings (40 beers at any given time). However that’s not to say it’s going to be as easy for you to get it as it is for me. However BevMo does carry this brand so check your local store and online to see if they will have it available for your purchase. Trust me, this beer is well worth the effort.
Ten FIDY has a serious variety of malts (two-row malt, chocolate malt!) along with other grains (roasted barley, flaked oats, rice hulls, and hops) added to the mix to create a uniquely flavored, almost black brew (and it’s been exquisitely hand-crafted) and will definitely be grabbing media attention when it’s released. This stout will be like whiskey/scotch meets high-malt beer — and if you liked Sam Adams Utopia but wanted a more complex, malt-driven flavor, this would be a fabulous choice.
Rated #30 in the Top 100 Beers by Beer Advocate–no mean feat to achieve–the Colorado-based Oskar Blues has a lot to crow about given that there are only six breweries in the state compared to California’s 23 (the most in the US for indie breweries). Ten FIDY won a gold medal at the 2010 World Beer Championship; rated among the top 25 beers according to Maxim magazine and snagged a 100 rating from RateBeer. So there is no particular bias on my part about Ten FIDY being something special. It is what it is: full-bodied, robust, and a manly man kind of beer — yet exceptional women will like it too. (Whether or not that includes you is totally up to your taste buds!)
For boutique beer fans this is a “must-have” for tasting. Buy 4 x 4 can packs ($14.49 each) and give them as holiday gifts to your favorite people.
