I was astonished this week– and glued to the TV set- to watch the Brittany and her mom defend the use of Botox on an 8 year old child. I am not sure who’s got their head on backwards — but for sure Good Morning America’s Lara Spencer was as outraged at the risk that the mom (Kerry) took with her own daughter’s health.
Here is the clip below– and it’s the follow-up to the initial coverage and the expression of feelings there that seems to have engendered this avalanche of anger.
Nancy Lichtenstein is no stranger to this column and she wrote something for Yahoo.com which is pretty spot-on– but also targets other questions that have arisen out of this debacle surrounding Brittany and her mother Kerry.

Proposed N.J. Ban on Botox for Minors Spotlights the True Price of Beauty
COMMENTARY | Though I’ve been a beauty writer for many years now and appreciate a beauty fix as much or more than anyone, the proposed ban on Botox for minors for cosmetics purposes by the New Jersey State Assembly has me steaming. To be clear, it’s not that I’m mad at the Assembly for banning Botox for minors; I’m mad that there’s a need to create such a law to begin with. I see nothing wrong with adults who want Botox to preserve a youthful appearance, especially if it is required by their profession, as is the case with actors. I see something very wrong, however, with parents who are encouraging obsessing over looks in their children (because I’m pretty sure they’re the ones who are paying for this), and with doctors who are catering to this “need” to make a few bucks.
For the doctors who do this, I have some questions. Do you really think it’s okay to perform unnecessary cosmetics procedures on children? Did the Hippocratic Oath get revoked while I wasn’t looking? Is there a new addendum that says “Beauty and money trump all?” Or do you just think it applies to everyone except you?
There’s a lot more to this piece — but Yahoo limits what I can post. For the rest, please go to

Kudos Nancy!!!
