I remember as a child I loved Christmas. I couldn’t stand the wait for presents. I was really little and my brother and I work up early and my mother had made the mistake of hiding all the gifts until some evening and then putting them out while we were asleep. What does a 3 or 4 year old do when they wake up and suddenly find packages under the tree? But of course!! It’s Christmas and Santa has been there. Paper ripping and kids playing with toys (my brother got a fire truck and I got a toy oven) woke my mother up who was absolutely furious with us. I will never forget the look on her face and that she had to take the presents away from us.
We were in so much trouble– yet we were just little kids.
Christmas is a day for children of all ages and I wish you the special joy that you would love to have in your heart of hearts. It makes not difference if you are 5 or 52 or 105. You can still capture that wonder, that sense of Santa Claus and also that sense of family — no matter if you are making that family up from friends and neighbors or you have a great relationship with those people to whom you are actually related.
Stop and take a deep breath or two and realize the blessings of what you currently have. You are here hopefully in your home or someplace where you are happy to be– with people who care about you.
You aren’t in Afghanistan in harm’s way, you aren’t on the streets in harm’s way. You are with people who care about you. If you are alone, realize that there are people around you who might not be near you who also care. So for friends, family, friends I have yet to meet, colleagues and those who I have worked with from afar– I wish you a happy holiday season– even if you don’t celebrate this day. Join me in celebrating it together.. you and I — along with everyone else who is reading this. Because we are part of a family.. a network of people who are knitted together by bonds of varying connections but still we are connected.
