When is a burger not just “any burger”? When it’s a contest driven creation by the national chain of resto + bowling alley + local hangout, Lucky Strike Bowling Alleys. Maybe you don’t know Lucky Strike and it’s amazing chain of bowling alleys with lane-side food and drink service along with up to the minute music, sports coverage on a gazillion TVs along with music videos. The cool part is that they are already established in 13 states- California being the home base for the chain.
In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Lucky Strike has launched a Burger of the Month program showcasing the creativity of its culinary team. The company, which has revolutionized bowling cuisine by providing a flavorful “spin” on traditional favorites, has also revealed its January burger, the PBB&J Burger – a classic American burger topped with bacon, peanut butter and jelly. The unique creation, created by Chef Armando Chavez of its LA Live location, is now available at most Lucky Strike locations until the end of the month.
Each month, Lucky Strike Founder and CEO, Steven Foster, National Culinary Director, Kip Wotanowicz and Vice President of Marketing, Romy Mehlman, will select the winning burger submitted by its culinary team members to be sold at participating Lucky Strike locations during the following month.
At the end of the year, the top-selling specialty burger will be permanently added to the Lucky Strike menu in 2015. To view photos of the winning chef and burger each month, or to post feedback or a review of each burger, fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #getluckyburger on Twitter or Instagram, and leave us comments on our Facebook wall.
“We are excited to celebrate our 10th anniversary by launching our Burger of the Month program,” says Foster. “For a decade, every dish at Lucky Strike has been made with the freshest, high-quality ingredients – creating exceptional items for our guests. This program is a fantastic way to continue to highlight that, and it gives our chefs an opportunity to present fun and unique flavor variations in an innovative way. We are excited to see how our customers embrace the PBB&J Burger, and others, in the months to come.”
Lucky Strike venues participating in the Burger of the Month program include Boston, MA, Bellevue, WA, Chicago, IL, Denver, CO, Fort Worth, TX, Hollywood, CA, Houston, TX, Lombard, IL, Los Angeles, CA, Miami, FL, New York, NY, Novi, MI, Orange, CA, Philadelphia, PA, Phoenix, AZ, Washington, D.C., West Nyack, NY and Vaughan in Ontario, Canada.
The chefs from the various stores of this chain are invited to submit their best burger for a competition that would have the winning recipe featured in ALL the stores across the country! The winning recipe for January was the PBB & J! (What’s that? Peanut Butter, Bacon and Jelly– on a burger with all the basic fixings). I was definitely intrigued by this burger and sent a reply asking for more scoop on this dressed up burger & bun.
Long story very short, I visited the ORANGE, CA Lucky Strike to test drive this burger. I met the store manager, Eric who gave us some background on the chain. It’s a family friendly place during the day and more adult friendly at night with lots of great music, drinks, food and -of course- bowling! It was a fun place and definitely someplace to revisit with friends for some fun in the bowling alley.
The primary reason I was there was to taste the PBB & J burger. The burger is a basic burger with peanut butter, bacon and grape jelly on it. It comes with the usual side of crispy chips. My partner had a cheeseburger and we kicked it all off with an order of the Belgian fries or frittes. Either way you pronounce it, those are amazing fries!
Belgian Fries (accompanied by a couple of dipping sauces) and they were fabulous!
PBB & J Stacked
The stuff on the platter is the grape jelly. It’s a slippery burger for sure!
PBB & J burger open-faced
The basic burger with 2 strips of crisp bacon, a serious dollop of peanut butter and a scoop of grape jelly.
It was one big burger. It might not look like it in the photo, but it’s HUGE! I ate 50% of it and took the rest home. I figured I would finish it the next day.
Wondering what I thought? The first taste was pretty good but the peanut butter and jelly were melting fast on this hot hot burger. It’s hard to keep things together when you don’t want the burger to slide apart. Personally I think the peanut butter adds something interesting to the bacon burger mix. It’s texture blends well. The jelly is very sweet. I love sweet but grape jelly is something I never eat. ( I don’t like grape jelly or grape suckers or grape soda.) I don’t think a change of basic jelly flavor would have worked for me. There is a need for contrast in the taste and texture of the burger. I would love to see the sweetness of the jelly married with a bit of heat and maybe some chewiness (or not on the last part). I think a dose of some sort of hot sauce (SAAS hot sauce would kick it up a couple notches) and/or some chopped jalapeno to change texture and give the burger some bite.
Want to test drive YOUR ideas for this burger? See the recipe below and test drive your creativity! I know what I would do – but I am not going to tell you!

Thanks to Eric, the manager and Tiffany our very friendly and helpful server at Lucky Strike for our first visit and the test drive of the PBB & J burger. It was a fun visit and I would highly recommend a visit or two to check out the burgers!
If you want to try out the PBB & J Burger, you need to head into a Lucky Strike near you before the end of January. February 1 is a new burger contest. Do visit once a month with friends and/or family for a great brew
