As you are reading this post, it’s Cyber Monday (I HOPE!). Thanksgiving is behind us. What was this 4 day weekend (or maybe 5 if you had Wednesday off) like for you? Was it full of family, friends and fun? Or how about feasting, football and not moving too much? Typically Thanksgiving weekend is the signal to the end of the year when we eat the least healthy foods and in not-so-healthy quantities as well as don’t get enough sleep or exercise. It’s about excess from spending to eating and hanging out that’s what the holidays mean for many. That excess can put at least 10 pounds on you, drive up your blood sugar and your blood pressure as it ages you. YIKES!! What do you do to change all this?
Dr. Scott Weiss, D.P.T., A.T.,C CSCS.is the perfect person to help you dig out of this holiday and get you on a program that will get you healthier, fitter with a balanced approach to life as well as the holidays. Now is the time you can make the change. Dr. Weiss has some meaningful tips. He’s contributed the blog post below to gives us smart and easy ways to detox from the Thanksgiving excess. Start now and you could have a healthy habit or two going on by Christmas!
How to Survive Post Thanksgiving Remorse: Health & Fitness Detox Tips
It’s all over – we watched the football games, stuffed ourselves with pumpkin pie and loaded up on several servings of grandma’s candied yams. The day after Thanksgiving many Americans are fighting the turkey’s revenge. Studies show that Americans do gain weight over the holidays, and while many are preparing for their Black Friday shopping the day after Thanksgiving, others will be hitting the treadmills. The morning after turkey day may not leave you looking and feeling so great. And on top of the food coma, skimping on sleep and drinking alcohol can really take a toll. Of course, one day of merriment is not going to irrevocably wreak havoc on your system.
Dr. Scott Weiss, exercise physiologist, board certified athletic trainer and co-founder of Bodhizone in NYC, says there are things you can do to help get your body back-on-track quickly.
1. Folate is a vitamin that you will want to replenish
after drinking alcohol, as alcohol moderately depletes our body’s store of it. The nutrient has many benefits – it helps the body produce and maintain new cells and prevents changes to DNA that may lead to cancer.
2. Yoga for digestion:
You don’t even have to wait for the next day to get a start on detoxing. Do some yoga poses (like Apanasana, the spinal twist or the bridge pose) for digestion after you wake up from your food coma or the next morning to keep everything running smoothly. Even better, go for a run the morning after Thanksgiving: cardio is a great way to detox.
3. Stock up on detox foods:
Fridge space may be lacking, but make some room for foods like dark leafy greens, beets, and whole grains to help aid in detoxing.
4. Make a plan to exercise on your day off.
Many people have either a half day or even a full day off after thanksgiving. Make it a point to do both cardio and strength training. This will not only help burn the extra calories you ate but make you feel a whole lot better mentally. Total body weight exercises are great as is simple walking or light jogging when you are too lazy to motivate and get to the gym.
5. Don’t forget about water.
After a huge meal, the body is in desperate need of water to aid in digestion. On the few days after Thanksgiving try to have at least 2 to 2 -3 liters of water. This will not only help digestion but aid in detoxing the body. This basically works to help flush the body.

Thanks to Dr. Weiss for the great tips. Not only are they easy, they can be applied today, tomorrow as in ASAP. Water is easily consumed. Taking some folate now even after you return to work will help clear out the alcohol. The exercise is a smart move (pun semi-intended) that will pay off big time. Then adding in healthy ‘clean’ foods that he recommends will be helpful to get you feeling balanced again.
