I love the beauty breakdowns as well fashion portion (duh) of the red carpet events. I love to see how a makeup artist puts it all together. Here are a couple of celebrity makeup artists who share the process of creating the looks of Rosamund Pike and Dakota Johnson. I chose each because of the difference in their personal coloring and age. The fact that they both wore red wasn’t noticed until I was putting this post together!
ROSAMUND PIKE–Makeup by Celebrity Makeup Artist Mélanie Inglessis
INSPIRATION
As soon as I saw Rosamund’s dress, I knew this was going to be a ‘moment.’ Grace Kelly at the 1954 Academy Awards was my inspiration. I wanted makeup that was beautiful, chic, modern and balanced, with an overall sense of beauty, instead of one specific feature standing out.
FACE
I wanted Rosamund’s skin to have a flawless, milky-matte finish. Using a dampened Beautyblender, I worked CHANEL Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 into the skin, starting from the center of the face and blending outward.
I then buffed in CHANEL Soleil Tan de CHANEL Bronzing Makeup Base below the cheekbones, blending it slightly onto the cheeks, forehead, jawline and bridge of the nose.
EYES
A matte, defined eye look is what I had in mind. I started by applying MAKE UP FOR EVER Matte Artist Shadow in #M-530, Eggshell all over the lid, then added MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Liner in #M-50, Matte Bright Brown near the lashline and smudged.
I blended the liner with CHANEL Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Mirage and worked the eye crease with MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Shadow in #M-536, Milk Tea.
LIPS
I defined Rosamund’s lips with CHANEL Precision Lip Definer in Beige Innocent.
Then, I applied CHANEL Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Mademoiselle, which is very close to Rosamund’s lip color. The new CHANEL Rouge Coco lip colours are ultra-hydrating, while still delivering vibrant color.

DAKOTA JOHNSON–Makeup by CHANEL Celebrity Makeup Artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua
INSPIRATION
To complement and balance Dakota’s striking—yet romantic, long, red gown and the diamonds, we kept the makeup young and modern, with a soft, blended, smoky eye featuring warm, caramel tones, and a red stained lip.
FACE
I lightly applied CHANEL Perfection Lumière Velvet Smooth-Effect Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Sunscreen in 10 Beige, focusing mostly on the T-zone.
I added CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour SPF 15 in N°30 to contour under the cheekbones, under the jawline, on the top of the forehead and tip of the nose.
EYES
I started by applying CHANEL Le Volume de CHANEL Mascara in Noir, then dotted on CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Marron Glacé in the crease and along the lower lashline.
On the outer eye area, I slowly built up color, keeping the lid and upper lashline clean and fresh. I blended and feathered the liner, then set the look with the medium-toned caramel shadow from CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Tissé Rivoli and blended again.
LIPS
I filled in Dakota’s lips with CHANEL Precision Lip Definer in Capucine, then smudged on a small application of CHANEL Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Gabrielle.
After blotting the lips, I applied a second coat, starting in the center, and faded out the edges for a modern, bitten look.

Red is such a hard colour to wear well. I think I like Dakota’s look best.
