I got this blast from Citizens of Humanity on their latest style release. It was very interesting because I was seeing this jeans’ style all over (last week)– papers, online in stores, blogs, and in magazines.
One woman’s culottes are another woman’s gaucho pants, but whatever the Melanie is, it’s an amazing new jean from Citizens of Humanity that is launching July 1 on www.citizensofhumanity.com and select stockists. Priced at $278, Catherine Ryu designed it as the coolest Summer denim look yet.
The Melanie Jean (also known as the Gaucho or Culottes). This jean is a distinctly wider leg. Most women would applaude the wider leg because it’s infinitely easier to wear and is more forgiving. The length is what is throwing people off the mark.
Given that I have seen the gaucho/culotte in many iterations for this year and previous years in cotton, linen, tencel, wool blend (JCrew back about 5 years or so) and denim, I wanted to ask an expert — particularly a denim expert- how to wear this style since it will filter down this summer along other pant styles. It’s about being open to the style and then putting the outfit together so that pieces all work.
I was able to reach out to Citizens of Humanity’s Creative Director, Catherine Ryu for her tips. She is the expert in how this silhouette can be styled!
1) Any tips on how to wear this Melanie jean?
Catherine Ryu, Women’s Creative Director
“For day, style back to pointy flats and a fitted crew t-shirt tucked in. i.e How Jane Birken would style from the 70’s.
For evening, style back to strappy sandals or ankle boots and your favorite evening top or jacket.”
2) Measurements of waist, inseam, leg width at hem and hips if possible? This will help the average consumer to gauge fit!
Using a size 27 for measurement: here is the key info:
It’s a size 27 but design have said that the key measurements are
Front rise : 10 ½”
Leg Opening : 25 ½”
Inseam : 26 ½”
If you need complete sizing: here’s the breakdown!
Waist : 30 ½”
Front rise : 10 ½”
Back rise: 15 3/8”
Leg Opening: 25 ½”
Inseam : 26 ½”
(*That said, your height will play an element in the fit and the length. If you are shorter, take a careful look at what length will work for you and either find it out there in various styles or if you want it in denim (which most would), prepare to have it tailored).
When you are looking at the entire picture you might want to wear chunky block heel sandals, and perhaps something that is a touch shorter in the tee or sweater department to create a waistline.
Also note that during fall/winter, this is perfect with a knee high pair of boots and a great sweater or button-down shirt.
Note it is coming out 7/1/2015.
So start talking to your favorite stores about getting this pair of jeans on waitlist!
3) Where is the denim sources? What are washes available?
Our fabrics are sourced from a variety of mills in Japan and Italy mainly. This specific style’s fabric is sourced from Japan!
At the moment it is only available in this blue wash called Retro, but it may come in other washes in the future. And this specific denim is sourced in Japan!
So that’s the quick version of how to style this unique jean. I haven’t seen it on anyone else but it will probably hit the Hamptons, NYC, and certain spots in LA!. So keep your eyes peeled for the tabloids to see this as well as other high-end fashion magazines.
