I don’t know about you but here in Los Angeles, if it’s not sunny, it doesn’t feel right. I know that sounds crazy- even spoiled. The beauty of being born in Southern California is that you get used to seeing sun almost every day. Overcast days are much like a short “blue-feeling” day. What I have found out is that one way to beat those “blue” overcast days is to get some glow on– as in self-tanner to leave the pale me behind if only for a week or so. It helps me look towards spring and ultimately summer – my favorite time of year.
Why would anyone use self-tanner?
1)Personally, I don’t want to get a ton of UV exposure, though I do love spending time out in the sun. What I do is use a fair amount of sunblock every day. So doing the natural tan isn’t really going to work for me – or you either!
2) Using a self-tanner is almost instantaneous results. Talk about immediate gratification, you can see changes overnight with the right self-tanner. It doesn’t take as long to build up color, if you keep working on the self-tanner for several days.
3)Going slowly from pale to golden is better than going bronze in one swoop of mousse, lotion, spray or towelette.
There are lots of brands out there for self-tanners- some more $$$, others less. Some brands are more time or application intensive. It’s hard to choose. You do want a dependable product that you know will match in tone from the various application types you might use. In other words, don’t switch between brands as the ingredients and pigments are often different between brands.

Tips for buying and/or applying any self-tanner
1) Realize that the color has to build up- especially since it’s winter right now in the US, you might find that you need a few extra layers of self-tanner.
2) Wear gloves when you apply self-tanner- even the towelettes can stain your hands. Plastic gloves are ok. Nitrile is thinner than most latex gloves. Find -and USE- what works for you in terms of gloves.
3) Allow the product more time to dry in the winter since it’s colder.
4) Ask for help from a friend or family member
5) Make sure to exfoliate before application of self-tanner so that dry dead skin is removed to make applying easier.
6) Tanning product activity as well as longevity depends on how it’s applied. If the product layer doesn’t dry entirely, it’s likely that it’s not going to last as long or turn out how one would like.
Bottom line: Be patient and pay attention to the details when applying self-tanners. Don’t forget to refresh your self-tanner.
And most importantly, do not forget to use sunblock!
