Today is PI Day and it’s going to be the hot or trending topic for the day. Having spent some serious time at Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim for the world’s largest expo/trade show of natural products, I got a chance to talk to many brands and some were really into PI Day!
Whole Foods is a big player in the natural products world- that’s not news to anyone. But here’s the news for today from Whole Foods:
Whole Foods Market is celebrating Pi Day with $3.14 off both large bakery pies and large take-and-ba
ke pizzas.
This Pi Day deal is only valid on March 14 and available while supplies last. Varieties of pies and pizzas vary from store to store, but may include pumpkin pie, apple pie, gluten-free apple pie, cherry pie, pepperoni pizza, cheese pizza, vegan pizza and more.
All pies and pizzas contain absolutely no hydrogenated fats, no bleached or bromated flours, and no artificial flavors or preservatives. Selection varies by store and excludes frozen.
Wholly Wholesome: is a big fan of PI Day
Wholly Wholesome wants to celebrate the mathematical constant pi (π) AND eat lots of pie! Pi Day can be observed in many ways, including eating pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number π.
Not only do they want to celebrate with you, they provided a page full of PI Day facts for you HERE: http://whollywholesome.com/blog/2017/03/08/true-foodies-prepare-pi-day-like/. It’s fun reading for anyone!
Wholly Wholesome is a brand I met at Natural Products Expo West. I met with the founder and got the “tour” of the different products and also more specifically the pie products that I wanted to feature today!!
They are not just about making pie crusts and various baking products, they have a very diverse collection of products. Since today is only about PIES (or PI), I am featuring these various crusts from which you can make a pie: either a pre-formed pie crust or one that you fit into a pan.
The cool part about the Wholly Wholesome Brand is that they also provided me with pie recipes!! So I am sharing a few with you here.
Pie Recipe #1
Apple Crumble Pie
Ingredients:
1 Wholly Wholesome 9″ Traditional Pie Dough
Filling:
6 medium sized apples (I like Granny Smith)
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp. corn starch
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Crumb Topping:
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1/3 cup all purpose flour
1/3 cup rolled oats
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 cup unsalted butter
Directions:
For the Filling:
Mix together dry ingredients in a large bowl. Peel, core, and slice apples, toss with the dry ingredients until evenly coated, and sugar mixture is moistened from apples. Pack apple mixture evenly into a Wholly Wholesome 9” pie shell. The apples will be piled high, but will cook down some in the oven. Finish with crumb topping.
For the Crumb Topping:
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. You can cut in butter with a fork or a pastry blender, or simply rub it in with your hands. Mix until butter is worked into the dry ingredients, it should look lumpy but dry. Smooth the crumb mixture over the apples.
Place pie on a sheet pan and bake in a 375° oven for about an hour (maybe a little longer). You will know the pie is done when juices bubbling out of it look thick, or a paring knife is easily inserted in the center and the apples are tender. The pie will sink down as it cools.
Pie Recipe #2
Peanut Butter Pie
Ingredients:
9″ Wholly Wholesome Chocolate Pie Crust
1/2 cup peanut butter
8 oz. cream cheese
2 tsp whole Milk
1 cup of heavy whipping cream
1 cup of unrefined & unbleached confectioner sugar
Directions:
Soften cream cheese in medium bowl.
Add peanut butter, sugar and milk to cream cheese and mix thoroughly.
Whip heavy cream in separate bowl.
Fold cream into peanut butter mixture.
Spread into Wholly Wholesome crust.
Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours before serving.
Can be served for up to 3 days. Keep refrigerated.
While filling is key, the crust has to taste good too. If the crust isn’t great, then the pie won’t be eaten. Turn to Wholly Wholesome for great pies from top to bottom!
Gluten-free pie shells
Traditional pie shell
Wholly Wholesome also has cookie crusts and graham cracker crusts that make great pies too. You can get either the cookie or graham cracker crusts and fill it with ice cream for your super-easy – and tasty- PI Day treat!
If you are really short on time (and help!), try one of the ready to bake pies from Wholly Wholesome!
In case dessert isn’t your thing OR you need a meal, then turn to Wholly Wholesome’s Pizza dough to create your own pizza pie and dress it up with veggies and other great toppings. Their pizza dough is amazing– and it’s gluten-free too.

I treat myself to a trip to Whole Foods about once a month. I go on a little controlled food shopping spree..through the produce and onward. They do have an excellent selection of all health foods. I have not tried their pie shells…perhaps on my next spree I will.
