I love summer! It’s my favorite time of year. I used to live on the beach and my favorite thing to do was to “lay out” and catch some rays.
When I was growing up, my mom would partner up with her best friend (another mom) and take all of us kids to the beach for the day – and I mean it was all day. Mom wasn’t much for sunscreen – and I have learned a lot about the outcomes of not using sunscreens to protect your skin. It’s not just about anti-aging; it’s about preventing cancer!
I am featuring 6 different brands with some specific choices from each brand. There are other product options included but not all are reviewed!
Disclosure:I was provided most of the products listed (but not all!) for review. Those that are being reviewed will have a REVIEW within each brand section to indicate that it’s something that I have tried.
There are a few brands that I have reviewed before (Colorescience Sunforgettable) and I am updating my content/review here. Since my relationship with Colorescience goes back several years, I happily buy it and wear it since I know how versatile it is.
Australian Gold Botanical Mineral Sunscreens
Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Mineral Lotions SPF 50
Review:
The best thing about these two sunscreens besides their respective SPF (50 and 30)is that they apply easily and vanish into the skin quickly. They have a pleasant scent (non-chemical type scent). The botanical formula gives you 2 different physical sunblocks which makes it broad spectrum with both UVA and UVB protection. The texture is matte so that you won’t be greasy if you have oily skin. Might be a good option for everyday usage.

What does Reef-friendly formula mean?
From the brand:
According to the EWG, an estimated 25 to 60 million bottles worth of sunscreen chemicals wash off into coral reef areas each year. About 25 percent of sunscreen applied to the skin is released into the water within 20 minutes of submersion. When we shower, these chemicals wash off our skin and can pollute wastewater that ends up in the ocean as well.
The issue is becoming increasingly more serious. On January 20, 2017, Hawaii state senator Will Espero introduced a bill which would ban sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate in Hawaii (except under medical prescription) to the state Congress. Espero argues that a ban is important to preserve the state’s tourism industry- because Hawaii relies heavily on tourists attracted by its coral reefs.
What can you do?
It’s simple. Get your UVA/UVB protection from products that have “reef safe” claims that do not use the ingredient oxybenzone.
Enter Australian Gold’s New Botanical Sunscreen Mineral Lotions, whose reef-friendly, antioxidant rich formulas are free of Oxybenzone, Parabens, Phthalates, Petrolatum, PABA, SLS, Dyes and Oils. Their non-chemical sunscreen lotions deliver a refreshingly luxurious, powdery-clean feel that is never greasy and always safe for the entire family!

REVIEW:
I have to say I was hesitant about this product when I got it. I was sure it would never work for me– as a tinted moisturizer. I was surprised – and happily so– to find that this product does self-adjust. I found that the light was the perfect one for me – which I am not very pale, it does adapt well. It blends into my skin-tone and doesn’t look fake. It also lasted quite a while. Perfect if you are camping, at the beach or the pool for the day. It’s not greasy- which is a huge plus. APPLICATION TIP: Do apply thin layers and add in more necessary.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios
Gearing up for the hot, humid and sweaty days ahead is a real trial – especially for sunscreens. If you have problems finding a great all-purpose sunscreen, turn to this terrific Anthelios product from La Roche-Posay.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-In Sunscreen Milk
From the Brand & Consumer Reports:
Consumer Reports released their Consumer Report’s 2017 Annual Sunscreen Guide and La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 60 Melt-in Sunscreen Milk received a perfect score of 100 for the third year in a row!
Consumer Reports tested and rated over 60 lotions, sprays, sticks and lip balms with SPF claims of 30 or higher—30 being the minimum level recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology – and 23 of them tested at less than half their labeled SPF number (which doesn’t mean the products aren’t protective at all, but you may not be getting the degree of protection you think you are). La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-in Sunscreen Milk was the top-rated lotion sunscreen by Consumer Reports – thus solidifying La Roche-Posay’s leading expertise in UV protection and their commitment to developing only the most highly effective sunscreen formulations.

REVIEW:
This Melt-in Sunscreen Milk does what it says. Since I discovered La Roche-Posay products ( about 5+ years ago), I have been in love with this product collection. Non-greasy, absorbs quickly and you can see and feel the difference with this product compared to most sunscreens. If price is not an issue, this is my go-brand and go-to product. I keep tabs on the Anthelios products because it’s carried by many stores and Anthelios will go on sale! I like to have a variety of these products because sometimes I want a different presentation.
Promise Organic SPR 30 Coconut Sunscreen Lotion
Promise Organic SPF 30 Coconut Sunscreen Lotion
REVIEW:
I saw this product first at the Natural Products Expo West in March 2017. What an insanely great product this is. It’s natural. Despite the name, the product does not have a coconut scent; it’s scent-free. The texture of the product isn’t matte. It’s a great sunblock but it has a moisturizing feel. It will leave a sheen for a bit till it soaks in. It’s ideal for the body and particularly great for hands. My hands never felt that soft and moisturized after using a sunblock till I tried this product. Love that! It’s particularly good for those with dry skin since it will provide sun protection and deep hydration. If you have oily skin, you might want to see if you can try a tester on this product before using. Otherwise, it’s great for guys, kids, anyone who wants/needs a more organic, naturally based sunscreen.

REVIEW:
I love this product. It has a light texture and it has no fragrance. It spreads easily and feels silky on finger tips and on the face. It is absorbed quickly and doesn’t feel sticky or gummy. It also doesn’t look chalky or pasty. The “bonus” components of this sunscreen are the additional ingredients that go far beyond sunscreen activity by helping to nourish and rehab the skin. The brand offers a choice of SPF 50 or 30 which makes the question of product selection one of price since the SPF 50 version is more expensive than the SPF 30.
