Some of my favorite music genres are pretty well related. Indie/alt, Americana and Bluegrass all seem to be interwoven at times. Or it has when I have been looking at and hearing great new music and interviewing musicians. Here’s another “Americana”/country/”almost rock” musician who is definitely not new to the scene, but has done amazing work for many, many years . He’s well-known in many music segments and even crossed into other levels of public visibility– like politics and advocacy.

Americana singer-songwriter and environmental activist, Chuck McDermott, has released his latest music video, “Hold Back the Water,” which is a song he wrote as his “musical rant about climate change.” Recently premiered on Live in Limbo, the video depicts scenes of rivers overflowing and spilling into towns and streets.
In addition to his 40+ year music career, McDermott spent 30 years in the political world, helping push legislation to counter the climate change, including spearheading the drafting and eventual passage of a bill that addressed both civil rights and environmental concerns called the Environmental Justice Act. “Hold Back the Water” emerges from McDermott’s new album, Gin & Rosewater, which is out now on iTunes and other digital music sites.

Produced by the highly regarded Lorne Entress (Lori McKenna, Mark Erelli, Ronnie Earle, Hayley Reardon), McDermott’s new album brings together a who’s who cast of roots music musicians, including Marco Giovino on drums (Robert Plant, Buddy Miller, Nora Jones, Don Henley, Rodney Crowell), Kevin Barry on guitar (Rosanne Cash, Peter Wolf, Mary Chapin Carpenter), Duke Levine on guitar (Peter Wolf, Leanne Womack, J. Geils) and Richard Gates on bass (Richard Thompson, Patty Larkin, Greg Brown, Ellis Paul).
