San Francisco-based bartender Brian MacGregor created a cocktail inspired by the spices of the season and gives a nod to the California Gold Rush. This Highland Park whiskey cocktail features the brand’s latest expression ‘MAGNUS’ and is the perfect addition to the bar menu this Holiday season, as well as, a “must have” at your Thanksgiving dinner table.
The MAGNUS
A whiskey crafted in the old way by a new generation of Vikings, MAGNUS bears the soul of our Viking ancestors and the name of just one – our founder, Magnus Eunson.
The backstory:
Magnus Eunson was a direct descendant of the Vikings who settled on Orkney hundreds of years ago. He set up his illicit still in a bothy (a small stone hut) at High Park, Kirkwall that’s still the site of our distillery today. And, while we say Highland Park was founded in 1798, in truth that’s just the year that the authorities caught up with Magnus – he was certainly making whiskey before that!
We stay true to our founder’s bold and uncompromising approach to whiskey making – very little has changed here in the last 220 years. In MAGNUS, we celebrate this unbroken tradition with a single malt whiskey, matured in Sherry seasoned American oak casks, that delivers notes of sweet vanilla, overlaid with our distinctive aromatic smokiness.

Bar spoon apple butter
Method:
Shake and strain over fresh ice
Garnish with apple slices and cinnamon stick
Thanks to Highland Park Whisky Company for this recipe. It’s insanely easy and incredibly tasty! You could think about slow warming of the Magnus and maple syrup to create a warm version of this drink. If you are in Los Angeles, this sounds crazy right now because we are heading into 80 degree + temperatures for this week, but soon it will be cool again and you could brew up some coffee or strong black tea to make this work as a hot drink!
