What Are Your State’s Top 5 Favorite Holiday Candies PLUS Top Ten WORST Christmas Candies!

I am fascinated by the kind of data (graphs, trends and lists) that I am going to share with you from CandyStore.com. This piece is a guest post/guest expert commentary by Clair Robins, and she works for CandyStore.com. The results of a survey show the top 3 favorite Christmas candies by state!

In conjunction with the favorites by state, CandyStore.com released their Top Ten WORST Christmas Candy List on Monday, Dec 4, 2017. CandyStore.com surveyed over 13,000 customers to determine the worst Christmas holiday candy. Check out the infographic and read the passionate (!) responses from those surveyed. Many had to be toned down to a PG-13 level.

It may not seem like a huge sweets holiday, but the Christmas candy season really is. Think about all the baking and decorating and making fun crafts with kids that happens in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

How many candy canes will you hang from your tree?
Do you decorate snowman cookies with sprinkles and peppermint candy?
Well, a lot of people do, ok…and it all adds up.

We spoke with the National Confectionary Association, and they estimate that holiday candy sales will be $1.93 Billion this year. That’s for the 8 weeks leading up to Christmas – because holiday shopping, as we know, starts that early. That’s a 2% increase over last year, which the NCA attributes to improved economic conditions and extra time. There’s one more day between Black Friday and Christmas. Thanksgiving is on the early side this year.

The National Retail Federation projects that the average consumer will spend $110 on candy and food, which is twice as much as they’ll spend on decorations.

Christmas Candy Quick Facts

— 1.76 Billion candy canes are produced every year for the holiday season.
— Approximately 150 million chocolate Santas are produced annually.
— The largest candy cane in the world was made in Switzerland. It was 51 feet long.
— December 26th is National Candy Cane Day.
— Canada spent $362M (USD) in Dec 2014 on candy, confectionary & snack foods.
— 59% of holiday sales are expected to be online.

Here are the first 10 states and their top 3 candies  for each of those 10 states.  You can find the other 40 states HERE:

Alabama

Reindeer corn is a festive candy that’s derivative of its original Halloween counterpart. The Yellowhammer State loved that one too! Alabama’s top Halloween candy was candy corn. They love that stuff down there! I wonder what George Washington Carver would think about reindeer corn?

Alaska

The Last Frontier State loves Hershey Kisses at Christmas time. If they had a kiss for every mile of coastline in Alaska, they’d have 6,640 kisses. And then they’d probably need some chapstick.

Arizona

I wonder if there are Pez dispensers in the shape of telescopes. If so, you’d probably find them in Tuscon where they have the most telescopes in the world. AZ loves Pez at Christmas time, and Pez do make good gifts and easy, fun stocking stuffers. Skittles came in second, followed by Hershey Kisses.

Arkansas

Shine bright like a Starburst in Arkansas. If you get that subtle (and bad) joke, you must be from AR! …and a Rihanna fan. The Natural State loves those fruity morsels, along with candy canes and Skittles at #2 and #3.

California

Peppermint Bark reigns supreme in the Golden State. I wonder how much peppermint bark it would take to replace the actual bark on the General Sherman, California’s ginormous and really old tree. It would certainly look a lot more festive that way. M&M’s came in second in CA, Hershey Kisses third.

Colorado

Did you know a silver nugget that weighed 1850 pounds (!) was found near Aspen? It was a long time ago, but it makes sense why Coloradans love Hershey’s Kisses. It is like a big silver nugget. Reese’s Pieces and candy canes were runners-up.

Connecticut

Some people call people from Connecticut Nutmeggers. Must be an inside joke. But I guess Nutmegger is appropriate for a Christmas season article. It certainly rolls off the tongue better than Connecticuters. What rolls down the tongue in CT are M&M’s. Followed by Hershey Kisses and candy canes.

Delaware

Register your candy canes here for the best tax advantages. You can visit them on your holidays. Candy canes took the number one spot in the land of corporate entities. Followed by Pez and Hershey Kisses.

Florida

They found an 8,000 year old body in Florida so well preserved they extracted DNA out of its brain tissue. Maybe in a few more millennia they’ll dig up some poor sap from our time with a belly full of Skittles. Floridians loved them for Halloween too. M&M’s and Snickers were runners up.

Georgia

Sit on your idyllic Georgian porch, watch the willows weep and hand out candy canes to your neighbors. Sounds like a fine holiday tradition to me, even if I did just make that up. Candy canes topped the Peach State, followed by fruity combo of Skittles and Starburst.

Now if you are remotely interested in the top 10 worst ever Christmas candies .. (and one bonus entry), here is the link and a portion of that list.

This piece is by  Clair Robins  as well and she does offer one caveat that in this piece (found in complete  article at this link and the portion I am featuring below): the comments and list are her opinion

The Definitive Ranking of Worst Christmas Holiday Candies.

2-candy-shot.candystore

Be careful when you ask someone what the worst Christmas candy is. Strong opinions will flow. It fascinates me that asking people what their favorite [whatever “thing”] does not elicit nearly the amount of passion as asking someone what the worst is. I should have been a psychology major.

When we asked our customers to give a couple optional words to explain their choice for the worst… Whoa, did the floodgates open. It’s like they have been waiting for an outlet for their bad candy juju to flow. Letting them get it out actually felt like a positive exercise (exorcise?). If you guys are reading this, I hope you felt a great weight lifted. And thank you for your replies.

And that is how we came to rank the worst Christmas candy. While doing a larger survey, we tacked this on as a final – again, optional – question, hoping to get something out of it. Over 13,000 customers responded.

There were a range of different candies mentioned. Since we had enough data, we narrowed it down into the top ten WORST Christmas candies.

Interesting points that I noted between the two articles:

Since I live in California, I find it interesting in the favorites for that state. California’s favorite is Peppermint Bark. Ye, Peppermint Bark made the Worst Candies  List at #4.  Personally, I am not a fan of Peppermint Bark- having bought some a few years ago and it’s way too much white chocolate and the peppermint flavor is overwhelming. I don’t know a lot of people who like it either.  I mentioned it to Clair  Robins in the context of the discussions on these two articles and here’s what she had to say:

“We actually think the peppermint bark hate is a positive sign for this holiday treat. It might signal peppermint bark’s increasing popularity, and with that, we think, comes some backlash. After talking to some of the haters, we believe they are more vocal than before because they’re seeing peppermint bark everywhere now. It’s taking over, and not everyone loves their new holiday flavor overlords. It’s the pumpkin spice of December. Who wouldn’t want to be that?”

Thanks,  Clair, for that insight! As a person who dislikes Pumpkin Spice intensely, I can see the relationship there. I will just learn to ignore it and never buy it! What’s your surprise listing on your state’s  favorite candies and the Top 10 List of Worst Christmas Candies?
