Here’s the Bumbu story or stories since there are two: one for the Original, one for the Blend! (The content of the stories is from the Bumbu website: http://www.bumbu.com/countries.php
The Original:
Our flagship Bumbu Rum is based on the original recipe created by 16th and 17th century sailors of the West Indies, who blended native Caribbean ingredients into their rum and called it “Bumbu” – truly the original craft spirit.
Using the same all-natural native spices and no artificial colors or flavors, our rum is an authentic revival of this piece of Caribbean history, distilled in small batches and blended by hand. We’re pretty sure our great-great-grandfathers would approve.
The Blend:
The Heart of the Rum:
Our rum heritage isn’t just historical – it’s geological. Unlike most Caribbean islands (formed by volcanos), Barbados was created by coral reefs. Here, our ground water is purified as it’s forced through our natural limestone, making Barbadian water some of the finest in the world. Distillers elsewhere must filter their water before using it in their process – not so here.
This exceptionally pure water, coupled with carefully selected sugarcane from across the Caribbean and South America, lends the lightness and smoothness that’s central to Bumbu’s remarkable drinkability.
The Cane:
Our master distillers select sugarcane from some of the world’s best countries for producing the crop. The minerals and other elements present in sugarcane contribute unique characteristics when distilled into rum:
Barbados: Soft and sweet, with hints of vanilla and banana
Belize: Medium-bodied, with notes of coffee and cocoa
Brazil: Light and fruity with aromas of tropical fruits like mango and papaya
Costa Rica: Full-bodied and aromatic with hints of coriander and ginger
Dominican Republic: Full bodied and sweet. Notes of toffee and vanilla
El Salvador: Dry and light with floral aromas and exceptional smoothness
Guyana: Rich, heavy and earthy, with chocolate and caramel flavors
Honduras: Medium-bodied, with notes of orange and cinnamon
The Distillery:
Bumbu is made at a historic Barbadian distillery founded in 1893 and continuously operated for more than 120 years. Our rum is distilled using two continuous stills and aged up to 15 years in grade-A, once-used Kentucky bourbon barrels. The yeast used during fermentation is a distillery secret that dates back as far as 1840, when some of our original iron pot stills were cast.
