I had heard about Frida’s Mexican Cuisine restaurant and the various iterations that are included by the brand like Frida’s Tacos- a fast-casual restaurant that serves the same recipes but suitable for someone who wants to get in, eat and get out! I had not been to either but I was invited by the brand’s PR to visit the Cerritos location which at the time was their newest restaurant.
Disclosure: I was offered a complimentary meal for two in exchange for an # HonestReview. Translation: we got the meal for free.
I did leave a very healthy tip because the service was exemplary.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was definitely ready to eat when my partner and I showed up at 3:30 PM. Call it very late lunch, early dinner, supper or even happy hour, we were hungry. I get picky about my Mexican food. I grew up with it and in So. California there are lots of Mexican restaurants that say they are authentic, but most are pretty homogenized (translation: the food is not memorable) And often the service is lacking.. You are not sure when you last ate there but you know it was only “OK”.) That’s not what I want from my dining experience. To be honest, I haven’t been to a great Mexican restaurant in about 3 years.
It was easy to find the building and we had no problems finding any parking at all. There are lots of windows so there is lots of light inside along with the patio that faced the street. It’s a pretty large place and has a huge full cocktail bar with such an array of tequilas! Wow!
That’s not the entire bar- just part of it! The flip side has more tables, the patio is beyond. This place is really spacious!
We met Emma, one of the managers and she seated us in a booth and she told us about the restaurant and its menu. They serve a terrific brunch on the weekend (reservations are absolutely required) with their very own mariachi band too! Sounds like a great place for a weekend splurge! The server came right over to take our cocktail order. My partner had a draft beer and I had a “Skinny Margarita”. We had chips along with some very yummy salsas with those”sips” and we were very happy campers.
That Margarita was exceptionally tasty and you would never know it was a “skinny” Margarita. It’s also served in a huge glass. I didn’t even get close to drinking all of it! The
We perused the menu and my partner decided on the Taco Tasting Platter which features 5 tacos- and you get to choose the assortment of meats or poultry.
He got to choose the fillings. (meat and fish options) His “picks” were had chicken mole, carnitas, carne asada, al pastor and chicken. Each was incredibly tasty! ( I had a bite each one!). The meats were done very tender and the sauces were fantastic, but not overwhelming! Wow! This dish is quite large so either you need a good appetite or a big guy!
I had heard that anything shrimp was a great choice at Frida’s. I went with 3 shrimp tacos with beans and rice.
It was very tasty with lots of zippy flavors. The tacos had lots of plump shrimp – a lot more than I expected! , I could only eat 2 of the tacos. (I ate too many chips!) Surprisingly the beans and rice were good too. The beans had substance (meaning they hadn’t been fried down to mush) and still had the texture of beans with nice flavor.
We splurged and ordered the churros for dessert. It was absolutely churro heaven!
Served with fresh strawberries, the warm caramel sauce for dipping and drizzles of strawberry and chocolate, the churros are hot from the fryer so they are nice and crisp! They are really a decadent treat! We ate the. whole. thing. I was soooo full. Three weeks later, we are still talking about how great Frida’s restaurant is. It’s that terrific. While I don’t typically eat a lot of food, my partner loved his tacos.
Thank you to Frida’s Contemporary Mexican Cuisine for an experience and meal that was “beyond fabulous”! The service was terrific. The food was even better than the service. We are thinking of collecting some friends and making a reservation for brunch as soon as the weather turns warm again.
Hopefully, you will visit this chain and see what it’s all about. The food is terrific. I felt service was amazing too!
